Empathy is not inherently good. It is neutral, a part of life, an expanding and generative force. The third part of the discussion between experts Lidewij Niezink and Rasha Kutty concludes their previous contemplations with grace and elegance.

Empathy is a natural part of life and can be a powerful force for growth and connection. However, it's important to use empathy with intention and awareness of potential consequences. We should strive to stay open-minded, recognize our biases, and question ourselves to avoid becoming rigid. By practicing empathy, we can expand our boundaries and learn more about the world and ourselves.

As a society, we need to instill empathy within the world, to create more beautiful microcosms. Further, it is crucial to acknowledge taboos and work towards creating systems to regulate them, instead of passing judgment.

Misunderstanding empathy and forming opinions without proper research and analysis can lead to harm. We can strive to avoid labeling ourselves and others, and instead approach empathy with a curious and open mindset.

Discover the true meaning and potential of empathy with experts Rasha Kutty and Lidewij Niezink in a profound and enlightening conversation. Gain valuable insights on how practicing empathy can transform not just your personal relationships, but also the world around you. Don't miss out on this opportunity to expand your understanding of empathy and its impact on humanity. Tune in to the Empathy Experiences podcast now.

Our body and mind are connected, and wounds to one definitely reach the other. It is through this connection that we experience the world and ourselves in it. Trauma basically refers to any incident that inflicts damage on the psyche, leading to a feeling of fear, despair, helplessness, and shock. Sometimes the effect of trauma continues long after the inciting incident has passed and we remain gripped in the hands of past experiences. The first step to overcoming the effects of any traumatic experience is becoming aware of it and trying to face it.

In this excerpt from a session with the National Child Developmental Council, discusses why trauma and the process of identifying it is vital.

Note: If your traumatic experiences hold you down, overwhelm you, or make it difficult for you to function normally, we advise you to approach a licensed counselor.

Absolutely loved being a part of TEDxBangalore '23. The theme "safe spaces" proved to be both fitting and incredibly relevant. The diverse range of talks on local communities and social activism, puppetry and food journaling, STEM and animation, choral music and piano playing (to name some of them) were fascinating and insightful.

Beyond the enriching content, I must personally applaud my dear friends Sartaj, Raunak, and the exceptional team at egomonk for their meticulous planning and ex*****on.

I am grateful for the opportunity to have been a part of the event, for all the learning, and the wonderful people I met. I eagerly look forward to future TEDxBangalore experiences that continue to push boundaries, ignite inspiration, and create safe spaces for more profound discussions.

Can we empathize with a rock? Or a hill? Or the natural world?

A rock lying on the ground does not naturally inspire empathy, but it can force you to think: rocks, water, and various natural resources have existed on this planet for millenia. They have seen the rise and fall of civilizations, and have outlived most of our human ancestors. And perhaps, they will outlive our next generations as well.

Or think of the clothes you wear, someone had to design and think up an idea; another person had to grow cotton, extract wool, or produce nylon for the materials in your clothing; and yet another person had to regulate machines or work directly, perhaps in poor conditions, to manufacture your clothing.

In the second part of Empathy Experiences #3 with Rasha Kutty and Lidewij Niezink, join us for a discussion that questions the limits of empathy.

Can we hold an emotional space, not only for our friends and family, but also people we do not like, people we look down upon, the natural world and ecology of our planet, and finally, existence itself?

And how can we stay connected to people, yet not be overwhelmed by the immense suffering in the world?

Enjoy the conversation as our experts answer these questions and many more, helping you open your mind and heart to the world.

Self-awareness is where all transformation begins, and it holds true for empathy as well!

Without understanding the differences between ourselves and others, the boundaries that separate us and the limits we must not cross, we cannot hope to deeply relate to them.

Knowing yourself better can help you practice self-empathy and understanding, leading to greater well-being and authenticity as you feel more connected to yourself.

Even Sun Tzu, an ancient master of strategy, in his masterpiece The Art Of War, states, “If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles.” No matter what obstacles you face in life, self-awareness is a peerless asset that can help you overcome them.

In this excerpt from Kutty's session with the National Child Development Council, she discusses self-awareness as a foundation for better emotional health.

In today's society, the emphasis on social connection is often overshadowed by a lack of empathy and understanding. Throughout our educational institutions, workplaces, and even within our families, we can inadvertently become conditioned to prioritize material achievements and superficial accomplishments when evaluating others. This tendency can lead us to view individuals as mere representations of their financial status, academic achievements, or professional portfolios, rather than recognizing their inherent humanity. It is important for us to reflect on these patterns and strive to foster a more compassionate and inclusive perspective that values people for who they truly are beyond external markers of success.

Being empathic can help you be more sensitive, authentic, in touch with your emotions, and human. While this may not seem advantageous or practical at first sight, it can enrich your personal and professional life in countless ways.

Empathy is a learned behavior, however the capacity for it is innate. You can develop this skill and enrich your emotional life by putting in consistent efforts and being vulnerable toward your emotions anytime you desire to! Remember that The Empathy University® is here for you every step of the way!
