THREE DAY WORKSHOP OF COASTAL CIRCULATION MODELING CONCLUDED in KUFOS
A 3-Day training workshop on Coastal circulation modeling and larval transport has been concluded today at KUFOS. This training was organized by Nansen Environmental Research Centre India and Kerala University of Fisheries and Ocean Studies at their Panangad campus. Dr. Felix Jose, Associate professor of Marine Science at Florida Gulf Coast University from the United States led the training program. Dr. Jose was awarded the prestigious Fulbright-Nehru Specialist Fellowship from the US Department of State for traveling to Kochi and for leading this workshop. Scientists and Ph.D. scholars from Nansen Centre, KUFOS, CUSAT, NPOL, SCMS, Amity University and NIT Surathkal and other nearby colleges actively participated in this advanced training in Hydrodynamic modeling using DHI modeling suit. Hands-on training provides participants the necessary tools/know-how to advance research on coastal problems pertaining to coastal erosion, bi-valve larval transport, etc. Dr. Jose is hosted by Dr. Ajith Joseph, Director of Nansen Centre for the fellowship and the training was co-hosted by Prof.S.Suresh Kumar, Dean, Faculty of Ocean Science and Technology, and supported by the Research Council of Norway on Partnership for Education and cooperation in Operational Oceanography (PECO2) joint project of NERCI - KUFOS and supervised by Dr.Phiros Sha, Dr. V.P. The theme of this year's World Oceans Day is "Revitalization: collective action for the ocean". We are all connected, sustained, and supported by the ocean. A healthy planet necessitates a healthy ocean, but its health, as well as that of everyone who relies on it, is in jeopardy. It's the ideal time to learn about the oceans and their importance in our lives, as well as to consider what we can do to protect and keep them clean and healthy. We must work together to develop a new equilibrium with the ocean, something which restores its vibrancy and feeds it new life rather than draining its resources.
" *The Ocean takes care of us. Let's return the favour. Have a happy world Oceans Day* "

EARLY WARNING...... EARLY ACTION
About 40% of WMO members have a Multi-Hazard Early Warning System, which means that the vast majority of the world's population lacks dependable access to severe weather alerts.
The United Nations recently announced an ambitious goal to adapt to climate change and more extreme weather. The United Nations has asked the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) to establish weather warning systems for everyone on the globe. They estimate that enabling will take five years and cost around 1.5 billion dollars. However, it is a worthy expenditure to provide enough warning of impending extreme weather, especially in a world where such calamities are becoming increasingly common. Parts of Africa, the Caribbean, and Pacific island nations have been highlighted as having the most need for these weather warnings. Providing information to vulnerable areas to help them prepare for weather disasters could save lives and decrease the impact.
The announcement was made on world meteorological day on 23 March, which this year has the theme Early Warning and Early Action.
