820 Feet Below the Sea, Norway Has Finished the World’s First Underwater Tunnel Roundabouts

Norway is pushing engineering to new depths with Rogfast, a 16.6-mile undersea highway tunnel that will become the world’s longest and deepest road tunnel when it opens in 2033. The project includes two unprecedented underground roundabouts carved 820 feet beneath the North Sea to connect the small island of Kvitsøy.

Unlike immersed tunnels built from concrete sections, Rogfast is blasted directly through solid rock. Engineers are drilling through challenging geology while using advanced ventilation systems, precision surveying, and constant rock monitoring to keep the massive project on schedule despite extreme underground conditions.

Once completed, Rogfast will replace ferry crossings, shorten travel times, and connect communities year-round. The project is being hailed as one of the most ambitious transportation engineering achievements ever attempted beneath the sea.
