FORMALDEHYDE and CANCER RISK in INDIA

Spatial variability: Elevated formaldehyde (HCHO) levels occur in industrial hubs, coastal regions, and agricultural zones across India.

Cancer risk hotspots: Northern Indo-Gangetic Plain, Northeast India, and Kerala show the highest cancer risks (up to 81,280 cases per million).

Emission sensitivity: Reducing NOₓ emissions by 25% and 50% lowers cancer risks by 2.60% and 6.74%, respectively.

Policy implication: Strong regulation of HCHO emissions is crucial to reduce health risks, especially in areas with limited healthcare access.

Increasing Ecological droughts in India !

Here is the first comprehensive investigation of ecological droughts, their drivers, and their implications during the Indian Summer Monsoon (ISM).

Our analysis reveals that ecological droughts have been increasing across ecologically fragile regions, including pristine forests and croplands, leading to a decline in vegetation health across India.

The rise in multiple forms of aridity, together with shifts in the Indian Summer Monsoon associated with ocean warming and intensified anthropogenic pressures, has contributed to the increasing occurrence and severity of ecological droughts across the country.

The study is published in Communications Earth and Environment (from Nature Group). Its an open access article.

Meteorological aridity and, indirectly, ocean warming contribute to increased ecological droughts in India during the Indian summer monsoon by about 24% and 18%, respectively, according to an analysis of satellite vegetation data over the period 2000–2019 using machine learning.

A very good news again!

In 2016, Solomon et al. demonstrated that the Antarctic ozone hole is healing.

In 2017, Kuttippurath and Nair showed that the ozone hole recovery signal is apparent even at the 99 percent confidence interval. In addition, they also showed signs of ozone recovery in Antarctic summer measurements.
