The warming of the high-altitude regions of Jammu and Kashmir is far greater than the global average, approaching the scale of Arctic amplification.

This is not merely a climate change signal, it is a serious and growing threat to nearly 2 billion people downstream, with potentially profound consequences that demand urgent attention.
The findings have received remarkable media attention, appearing as front-page stories, prominent headlines, and editorials, and some are curated here.

I sincerely appreciate the commitment, integrity, and responsibility shown by the media in bringing research that directly concerns people’s lives and livelihoods into the public conversation.
Science matters most when it reaches society, and when evidence is given the space it deserves.

Heat stress and Air pollution in CITIES are strongly interconnected and should be managed together through integrated urban planning rather than as separate environmental problems.
We introduce a combined “Heat and Pollution index” to identify neighborhoods where residents face the greatest simultaneous exposure to:

1. Extreme urban heat, and
2. Hazardous air pollution.

1. Surface ozone (O₃) levels in India are rising and significantly reducing wheat yields, posing a threat to food security.

2. Relative wheat yield loss increased from 25.2% (2005) to 35.3% (2021), with production losses reaching ~48.6 Mt by 2020.

3. Critical wheat stages (anthesis and grain filling) experience ozone exposure above the safe limit (3000 ppb·h), mainly in the Indo-Gangetic Plain.

4. Strengthening air-quality management, crop monitoring, and ozone-tolerant varieties is essential to mitigate future losses.
