PHYSICS QUICK NOTES: The Rain-Man Problem
This fundamental Kinematics concept uses the principle of Relative Velocity to determine the direction in which rain appears to be falling to a moving observer (the man).
• Key Formula: \vec{v}_{RM} = \vec{v}_{R} - \vec{v}_{M}
• Umbrella Rule: Always hold the umbrella opposite to the direction of \vec{v}_{RM}.
In this note, we cover:
• Case 1: Rain falling vertically (\vec{v}_{R} = -v_{R}\hat{j}). Finding \tan\theta = v_{M}/v_{R}.
• Case 2: Rain already falling at an angle \theta with the vertical. (Crucial for competitive exams!)
