In a significant step towards strengthening industry–academia collaboration in India’s power sector, Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC) and IIT Kharagpur have formalised an R&D partnership through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).

Signed in the presence of Shri Rajesh Pandey, IAS, Chairman, DVC, the MoU establishes a framework for collaborative research and technology development across DVC’s business functions and areas of mutual expertise.

The occasion brought together senior representatives from DVC and IIT Kharagpur, including Prof. Abhijit Mukherjee, Associate Dean (R&D); Prof. Renji Remesan, School of Water Resources; and Prof. Subhajit Sidhanta, Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering.

The collaboration will focus on developing dashboard and digital solutions, dam and plant defect and condition monitoring, AI-driven data analytics and predictive maintenance, sustainable and efficient power plant operations, water management and logistics, and secure AI solutions for plant and grid optimisation.

By bringing together DVC’s operational expertise and IIT Kharagpur’s multidisciplinary research capabilities, the partnership seeks to translate cutting-edge research into technology-led solutions for safer, smarter, more sustainable and efficient power-sector operations.

From Programmes to Missions: Envisioning the Next Chapter of Indo-German Collaboration

Strengthening the longstanding academic and research ties between India and Germany, Prof. Suman Chakraborty, Director, IIT Kharagpur, shared a forward-looking vision for taking Indo-German collaboration beyond conventional programmes towards mission-driven global knowledge partnerships.

Speaking at the Dinner Reception with DAAD Alumni from IIT Kharagpur, hosted by the German Consulate Kolkata, Prof. Chakraborty outlined five key propositions for the next chapter of collaboration — addressing grand challenges through focused missions, connecting research with entrepreneurship, developing an Indo-German Innovation Corridor with IIT Kharagpur as a key anchor, empowering alumni as active partners, and leveraging Artificial Intelligence to transcend language barriers while preserving cultural identities.

The reception was graced by Ms. Gabriele Manig, Deputy Consul General of Germany, and Mr. Arthur Rapp from DAAD. From IIT Kharagpur, Prof. Suman Chakraborty, Director; Prof. Anandaroop Bhattacharya, Dean, International Relations; and Prof. Arkopal Kishore Goswami, Associate Dean, International Relations, were present on the occasion.

The engagement also brought together the wider Indo-German academic and research community through the DAAD Workshop at IIT Kharagpur, with over 40 participants representing renowned institutions from across India, including IIT Tirupati, IIT Kanpur, IIT Dharwad, VNIT Nagpur, Banaras Hindu University (BHU), Ashoka University, FLAME University, Savitribai Phule Pune University, Manipal Institute of Technology, and several other leading universities and institutions. The interactions opened avenues for deeper research collaboration, academic exchange and new institutional partnerships.

Together, India and Germany can build something far more consequential than another successful bilateral academic programme — a new model of partnership where knowledge, innovation and people come together to address challenges of global significance.

IIT Kharagpur proudly congratulates Prof. Sudip Misra, Department of Computer Science and Engineering, on being elected a Fellow of the Indian National Science Academy (INSA) — a distinguished recognition of his contributions to science, engineering and technological innovation.

An INAE Abdul Kalam Technology Innovation National Fellow and Faculty In-charge of the SWAN Lab at IIT Kharagpur, Prof. Misra has built an internationally recognised body of work at the intersection of Internet of Things (IoT), Artificial Intelligence and intelligent systems. He has authored over 550 publications, including 342 journal papers, 166 conference papers and seven fully authored books, and has 15 filed patents to his credit.

His research has translated scientific ideas into impactful technologies, including AmbuSens, a healthcare monitoring system; BHIM, a low-cost autonomous unmanned aerial drone for disaster management; and batteryless IoT sensing nodes for agricultural monitoring.

Over the course of his distinguished academic career, Prof. Misra has received several national and international honours, including recognition from ACM and IEEE, and has delivered more than 50 keynote and invited lectures across North America, Europe, Asia and Africa.

His election as an INSA Fellow marks yet another significant milestone in a career dedicated to advancing research, nurturing innovation and translating technology for societal impact.

Prof. D. D. Sharma, ANRF National Science Chair, IISc Bangalore, called on Prof. Suman Chakraborty, Director IIT Kharagpur, during his recent visit to the Institute. Their interaction centred on opportunities for strengthening national-level research collaborations and fostering deeper academic and scientific partnerships, with faculty members of the Institute also joining the discussion.

Prof. Sharma visited the Department of Physics to deliver a Platinum Jubilee Institute Colloquium and interacted with faculty members and PhD scholars, exchanging perspectives on contemporary research and scientific advancement.

The visit reflected IIT Kharagpur’s continued emphasis on meaningful academic engagement and collaborative research that brings together leading scientific minds and institutions across the country.

World Su***de Prevention Day 2026 | "Changing the Narrative on Su***de"

In the lead-up to and observance of World Su***de Prevention Day, the IIT Kharagpur community undertook a series of initiatives in line with this year's theme, Changing the Narrative on Su***de, and its call to action, Start the Conversation.

On 9th September, a dedicated training module developed by the Counselling Centre was conducted for security guards, supervisors, and hall managers, equipping them with the essential knowledge to identify and respond to crisis situations.

On 10th September, the observance continued with the training of student mentors under the Student Mentorship Program, followed by the formal launch of SAHACHAR, the Institute's in-house Wellness Buddy Programme. A Yellow Ribbon Drive was also conducted across campus, with students pasting ribbons of hope at various locations. The day concluded with students coming together at night to take a collective candlelight pledge - choosing openness over silence, and conversation over stigma.

Together, we start the conversation. Together, we change the narrative.
