TATA STEEL LONG PRODUCT (Previously Known as Tata Sponge), which has its manufacturing facility at Bilaipada (in Joda Block of Keonjhar District in Orissa), was initially set up as a joint venture company between Tata Steel and the Industrial Promotion and Investment Corporation of Orissa Limited (IPICOL). It has moved on since, becoming an associate company of Tata Steel following the former’s ac

quisition of IPICOL’s stake in 1991. The origins of Tata Sponge can be traced to a groundbreaking effort by Tata Steel to industrialise a backward area of Orissa. Tata Steel proposed to do this by introducing an innovative technology for making sponge iron - Tisco Direct Reduction (TDR), developed by its Research and Development Division. The plant commissioned by Tata Sponge was initially designed to facilitate a production capacity of 90,000 TPA, which was enhanced to 1,20,000 TPA during 1990-91. Later, to cater to the growing demand of quality sponge iron, Tata Sponge increased its capacity by adding a second kiln of equivalent capacity in 1998-99. In December, 2001 Tata Sponge commissioned a 7.5 MW captive power plant to produce electricity from the waste heat of exit gases of

its Kiln No.2.This helped the company to become self sufficient in power. A second power plant of 18.5 MW fed by the waste heat generated by Kiln No. 1 & 3 was commissioned in November, 2006. Revenues earned by the sale of surplus power generated from the power plants add to the profitability of the company, besides keeping the environment free of thermal pollution. Tata Sponge is among the first sponge iron enterprises to have earned carbon credits. Company completed the acquisition of steel business of Usha Martin Limited (UML) on 9th April,19. UML's steel business has a rich product mix of carbon steel & alloy steel category which caters to automobile customers as well as product high end wire rods. The steel business acquired includes an operational Iron Ore mine , a coal mine under development and Captive power plants. The Name change from "Tata sponge iron" to "Tata Steel Long Products Limited" is effective from Aug 20,2019. This brings a new brand identity and our first steps in Speical grade Steel production.

Tata Sponge was one of the recipients of the Best Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Practice award on Education, at the 8th Asia Best CSR Practices Awards 2016. The function was hosted by CMO Asia at Singapore.

Mr R Somnath, Chief (Corp Sustainability, Strategy & BusinessExcellence) received the award on behalf of the company. Also present duringthe award ceremony were representatives from the various organizations located in other Asian countries.

CMO’s Best CSR Practices Awards is one of Asia’s eminent recognitions for corporate organizations that recognizes the best practices in different fields of CSR, from across the countries in Asia. This award is an endorsement of Tata Sponge’s unstinting effort to bring about a social transformation in its immediate surroundings, by providing a greater emphasis on improving the educational standards, within the realms of CSR. Tata Sponge has spent considerable resources in promoting education, through a series of programs & activities, and its outcome has been very positive.

Tata Sponge has been awarded with the prestigious
Safety, Health & Environment (SHE) Award for 2017-18 by CII (Eastern Region), for its exemplary performance in employee health, safety & environmental care. The award category was ‘Manufacturing, large scale, (up to 2500 employees)’.
The company won the coveted recognition for its unstinting commitment to environment, employee health & safety through a variety of rigorous processes towards the objective. The verdict was reached after painstaking assessment of various applicants from across the nation competing for the award.

The award was presented to Tata Sponge in a formal ceremony organized at Kolkata. Mr Partha Chattopadhyay, COO (SB), Mr TM Dandapat, Head (Safety & Environment), Mr Sunil Dash, Manager (Safety) & Mr Sanjay Kumar Mohanta,President (Tata Sponge Shramik Sangh) received the award on behalf of the company.

Pakirti Team with the help of children organised Nukkad natak at TSIL market complex on banning plastic bags. The children distributed paper and cloth bags to all the people present over there encouraging them to make Tata Sponge plastic free !
