Turning over the Phrasal Verb: (NEW POST !)
Having learnt the phrasal verb precisely in an earlier post, we can 'turn over' the phrasal verbs formed from the base verb 'turn'. The reason for selecting the phrasal verbs of the base verb 'turn', specifically 'turn over', is to exemplify the point that the same phrasal verb can have different meanings also.
For example, 'turn over the phrasal verb' means considering or thinking about the phrasal verb carefully in order to understand it completely. At the same time, 'turn over' can be used to mean other different actions also as illustrated below:
1. He turned over to see outside. - means 'move the body to the other side'
2. The engine was turned over. - means 'start (with some device like starting handle)'
3. You must turn over the booklet to see the instructions. - means 'see the other/back side'
4. Turn over the bread/dosa to fry/brown it on both the sides. - means 'invert/overturn the sides(surfaces)'
5. Let's turn over to other (TV) channels. - means 'change'
6. The breakfast made my stomach turn over. - means 'nauseate'
7. Our company hopes to turn over 100 million dollars. - means 'do business (worth 100 million dollars)'
8. The police will turn the culprit over to the court. - means 'hand over' and the actual phrasal verb is 'turn over to'
9. The boss may turn the organization over to his son. - means 'give the control' and the actual phrasal verb is 'turn over to'
10. The house may be turned over to an hostel. - means 'convert' and the actual phrasal verb is 'turn over to'
In addition, we should know that there are many other phrasal verbs formed from 'turn' such as 'turn down', 'turn up', 'turn around', 'turn back', 'turn in', 'turn on', 'turn off', 'turn out', etc.
Last but not the least, there are some verbs like 'learn and know' which have no phrasal verbs.
