In a commendable initiative to promote environmental conservation and good living, the NSS units of Dyal Singh College, Karnal celebrated the Pravesh Utsav as Prakriti Mahotsav by distributing saplings to the new students. The programme, organised at the college campus, was aimed at inculcating a sense of responsibility towards nature among the new students.
The distribution drive was inaugurated by Principal Dr. Ashima Gakkhar, who emphasised on the importance of planting trees to combat climate change and increase the green cover of the area. Speaking on the occasion, she said, “This initiative not only welcomes our new students but also encourages them to actively contribute towards conserving our environment.”
The NSS volunteers also set up a help desk at the main gate of the college where they are helping the new students and resolving their issues. The programme saw enthusiastic participation from both students and faculty members. Each new student was given a sapling as a symbol of welcome and a pledge was taken to nurture it. The plants included several indigenous species such as neem, peepal, gulmohar, tulsi, guava, jamun, lichi which were selected for their environmental benefits and adaptability to the local climate.
The NSS programme officers Dr. Dimple Khosla, Dr. Tejpal and Dr. Usha highlighted the significance of the drive and informed that “The Paryavaran Mahotsav is being celebrated with the slogan “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam”. By distributing these saplings, we are not only increasing greenery but also promoting the culture of environmental conservation among our youth. Every student who plants a tree is taking a step towards a sustainable future.”
The students expressed their enthusiasm and commitment to the cause. A first-year student said, “Receiving a sapling while starting the college journey is symbolic and inspiring. It is a reminder that we all have a role to play in protecting our planet.”
The NSS volunteers, who had carefully planned and organised the event, were lauded for their efforts. This tree distribution drive run by the NSS unit of Dyal Singh College is a testimony to the institution’s dedication towards environmental sustainability and efforts to inculcate these values in the younger generation. As these plants grow, they will stand as living symbols of the college's commitment to nurturing both education and the environment.
