Nobel Prize winner in Chemistry, Omar Yaghi, didn’t always seem destined for a life in science. He grew up in Amman, Jordan, sharing a single small room with his many siblings, without electricity or running water. For young Yaghi, school was a place of escape and inspiration. One day, when he was ten, he sneaked into his school’s locked library and pulled out a random book. Inside, he saw strange but beautiful diagrams — his very first glimpse of molecular structures.

At fifteen, following his father’s strict instructions, Yaghi moved to the United States to study. He quickly developed a love for chemistry, especially for the art of designing new materials. But he found the traditional way of making molecules to be unpredictable. Chemists would mix different substances, heat them up, and hope for the right reaction — but often ended up with many unwanted by-products.

When Yaghi started his first research group at Arizona State University in 1992, he set out to find a smarter and more reliable way to build materials. His vision was to connect different chemical parts, like Lego blocks, to form large, stable crystals. After years of effort, his team finally succeeded by combining metal ions with organic molecules. In 1995, they created two new two-dimensional materials that looked like nets made of copper or cobalt. The cobalt version was especially impressive — it could trap other molecules within its spaces and remained stable even when heated to 350°C.

In his Nature article describing this breakthrough, Yaghi introduced the term “metal–organic framework” (M*F) — now used around the world to describe ordered molecular structures made from metals and organic compounds. These frameworks are full of tiny cavities that can store other substances, opening up exciting new possibilities for science and technology.

Breaking News:
The 2025 Nobel Prize in Physics has been awarded to John Clarke, Michel H. Devoret, and John M. Martinis for showing that quantum effects can happen in systems large enough to see and hold not just in tiny particles.

Their experiments used superconducting circuits (which carry current with zero resistance) separated by a thin barrier called a Josephson junction. They showed that electric current in this circuit could tunnel through the barrier and had quantised energy levels proving that quantum physics works even on a macroscopic scale.

This discovery helps scientists understand how quantum rules apply to larger systems and supports the development of quantum computers, sensors, and cryptography the future of quantum technology.

A black hole is a region in space where gravity is so strong that nothing, not even light, can escape.

Formed when massive stars collapse under their own gravity.

Surrounded by an event horizon — the boundary beyond which escape is impossible.
