KARGIL, 5 JULY 2022:-Mohd Ali Fazli Malla S/O Haji Ghulam Mehdi Malla Resident of village Lankerchey KargilLadakh, who has been declared qualified for the award of Degree of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in zoology Entomology.
He has worked on the Orthopteran (Grasshopper) Fauna of Ladakh on the topic of "Taxonomy and Diversity Of Orthoptera (Insecta) In Ladakh India, discovered 28 species of grasshopper from Ladakh region, out of these 2 species and 1 genera are first time reported from India, 1 species namely Gyabus fusiformis is the endemic species of india only reported in Ladakh, 14 species and 11 genera are first time reported from Ladakh region.
He has suggest that ,this work is the small contribution of the Insect fauna of Ladakh, many species are yet to be discovered in Ladakh, the fauna of Ladakh are not completely discovered.
Insects are important because of their diversity, ecological role, and influence on agriculture, human health, and natural resources. Insects create the biological foundation for all terrestrial ecosystems.
They cycle nutrients, pollinate plants, disperse seeds, maintain soil structure and fertility, control populations of other organisms, and provide a major food source for other taxa.
Most major insect pests in agriculture are non-native species that have been introduced into a new ecosystem, usually without their natural biological control agents.
Grasshoppers are proposed as ecological indicators of ecosystem qualities and efficacy of ecological networks.
He said, we need to do more work on the fauna and flora of Ladakh, and yet to discover the unknown species in our region, and also need to work on the agriculture field to control the pest for the balance of the ecosystem.
Ladakh is an untouched and broad area for the research line, so our youth need to come and work on these fields.
