Event Report: Wildlife Conservation and Research Opportunities in Ladakh

On December 8, 2024, the JPC Hostel hosted an insightful and inspiring session on wildlife conservation, led by Niazul Hassan Khan, a Ph.D. scholar from the Wildlife Institute of India. Currently serving as Principal Investigator at the Bombay Natural History Society (BNHS) in Ladakh and a member of the Ladakh Biodiversity Council, UT Ladakh, Mr. Khan brought a wealth of expertise to the event. His doctoral research focuses on the “Ecology of the Himalayan Brown Bear (Ursus arctos isabellinus) in the Trans-Himalayan Region of Ladakh” under the guidance of Dr. Bivash Pandav, Scientist-F at the Wildlife Institute of India, Dehradun. Some of his works have featured at reputed plateforms such as the National Geographic, Roundglass Sustain, Nature In Focus etc.

The presentation explored Ladakh’s unique biodiversity and highlighted the exciting research career opportunities in wildlife conservation.

Mr. Khan began by emphasizing the ecological significance of Ladakh’s wildlife, illustrating the remarkable diversity of mammals in the region. He offered compelling insights into species endemic to Ladakh, examining their behaviors and ecological roles in the fragile environment. A key focus of the talk was the pressing issue of human-brown bear interactions, which pose significant challenges in the area. He outlined innovative strategies to mitigate these conflicts, ensuring harmonious coexistence between humans and wildlife.

The session also delved into the fascinating realm of ethnomedicine, discussing the use of animals and animal-derived products in traditional healing practices. Mr. Khan underscored the importance of balancing cultural traditions with conservation efforts, advocating for sustainable approaches that integrate traditional knowledge into modern scientific research.

To inspire students, Mr. Khan shed light on career pathways in wildlife conservation, illustrating how individuals can actively contribute to preserving Ladakh’s fragile ecosystems. He shared his personal journey as a researcher, offering valuable advice and practical guidance to those aspiring to work in this field.

An engaging highlight of the event was the distribution of copies of Mammals of Ladakh: A Pocket Guide to students who participated actively by asking or answering questions. This thoughtful gesture encouraged curiosity and provided attendees with a lasting resource to deepen their understanding of Ladakh’s rich wildlife heritage.

The event concluded with an interactive Q&A session, where students enthusiastically exchanged ideas and sought advice from Mr. Khan. His inspiring presentation reinforced the importance of collective efforts in wildlife conservation and emphasized the immense opportunities available to researchers in Ladakh and beyond.

We at the JPC, would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to Niazul Hassan Khan for his enlightening presentation and for his dedication to raising awareness about the importance of wildlife conservation and research in Ladakh.
