Alagappa Government Arts College, Karaikudi in the Sivaganga District of Tamil Nadu, India, is a co-educational college started in 1947 by Dr. Alagappa with the motive of providing education to the underdeve
loped areas in and around Karaikudi. It offers various graduate courses. It is affiliated with Alagappa University. It was earlier affiliated with Madurai Kamaraj University until 2005. Alagappa Chettiar founded Alagappa Chettiar Educational Trust with the aim of developing the backward area of Karaikudi into a centre for higher education. On 21 July 1952 ACCET started with three faculties - Civil, Mechanical and Electrical and Electronics Engineering. The foundation for the main building of the college was laid by Rajendra Prasad, the President of India, on 19 February 1953.
1966 - The institution was handed over to the government of Tamil Nadu.
1969 - A new faculty, Electronics and Communication Engineering was started.
1983 - M.E. in Microwave and Optical Engineering started
1988 - Master of Computer Application (M.C.A) started.
2001 - B.E. Degree course in Computer Science and Engineering introduced. The institution has been awarded the status of the best engineering college of 2006-07 in Tamil Nadu. Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi honoured the Principal in a function at Anna University, Chennai, on September 1, 2008 for this cause. The college is now affiliated to Anna University of tech.,Madurai from 2010-2011. Amenities like Canteen, PostOffice are available. Alagappa University is on about 420 acres (1.7 km) in the business town of Karaikudi in Sivaganga District in Tamil Nadu, India. Karaikudi is 400 km south of Madras on the Madras–Rameswaram line and is accessible from Tiruchirappalli and Madurai in about 2 hours by road and rail. This seat of higher education has emerged from the galaxy of institutions founded by R.M. Alagappa Chettiar. Alagappa University was brought into existence by a special Act of the state government in May 1985 with the objective of fostering research, development, and dissemination of knowledge. Alagappa University is recognized by the UGC, Government of India. It was converted from a unitary type to an affiliating type by the Tamil Nadu Universities Act, 2002, with a view to widen the horizon of its academic activities by bringing into its jurisdiction the Arts and Science colleges in the districts of Ramanathapuram and Sivaganga. Further, as per this Act, the government colleges in the above districts have become the constituent colleges of Alagappa University. As a member of the AIU and the Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU), it has rewarding relations with other academic institutions, research laboratories and industrial establishments that promise a spectacular feature. The university's motto is “Excellence in Action.”
