We invite you to a hands-on Workshop on “Driving Semiconductor Growth through Digital Innovation”, jointly organised by Applied Materials India in partnership with the Advanced Centre for Materials Science (ACMS), IIT Kanpur, with academic support from the Department of Materials Science & Engineering (MSE).

🔬 This workshop will showcase AppliedTwin, a cutting-edge digital twin platform for semiconductor equipment and processes. Participants will gain practical exposure to multiphysics software solutions ACE+ and TOPO+, and understand how real-world challenges in semiconductor manufacturing are addressed through digital innovation. Live examples will include Plasma Enhanced Chemical V***r Deposition (PECVD) and etching processes.

On September 11, 2025, the Advanced Centre for Materials Science (ACMS) at the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur successfully organized a one-day workshop on Atom Probe Tomography (APT). The event attracted 55 participants, including students, researchers, technical staff, faculty members, and industry professionals.
The workshop featured an inaugural session with esteemed addresses from Prof. Niraj Chawake, Nodal Coordinator for NFAPT-IITK; Prof. Anish Upadhyaya, Head of ACMS; and Prof. Kantesh Balani, Head of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering. Prof. Upadhyaya emphasized the ACMS’s commitment to advancing research and innovation within academia, industry, and national laboratories, while Prof. Balani urged participants to actively engage with the program.
The technical agenda included presentations from leading experts in the field. Dr. Heena Khanchandani of IIT Kanpur covered the fundamentals and applications of APT, while Dr. Arun Devaraj from Pacific Northwest National Laboratory discussed nanoscale characterization of materials under extreme conditions. Additional insights were provided by Dr. Surendra Makineni from the Indian Institute of Science, Dr. Se-Ho Kim from Korea University, and Dr. Rama Srinivas Varanasi from Tohoku University, each contributing valuable perspectives on advanced materials research.
Participants also had the opportunity to tour the NFAPT-IITK facility, gaining firsthand experience of IIT Kanpur’s cutting-edge research infrastructure.
The workshop concluded with a valedictory session acknowledging the contributions of student volunteers and the ACMS staff, whose efforts ensured the event's success. This initiative further underscores IIT Kanpur's dedication to fostering innovation and advancing materials science through modern characterization techniques.

Vishwakarma Puja 2025: On September 17, 2025 (Wednesday), the Advanced Centre for Materials Science (ACMS) celebrated Vishwakarma Puja with great splendour. The event also had the gracious presence of the Director, IIT Kanpur, Prof. Manindra Agarwal, who also attended the celebration alongside the Head of ACMS, Prof. Anish Upadhyaya, and the Head of Materials Science and Engineering (MSE), Prof. Kantesh Balani. They participated in the Aarti and Puja rituals, joined by ACMS facility coordinators, ACMS and MSE staff, and some of their family members.
After the Aarti, prasad was distributed to attendees. Additionally, an open house was organised at ACMS for the family members and visitors.
This year's celebration was a great success, thanks to the dedicated efforts of the ACMS staff members who organised the event uniting as a family, from planning to beautiful decorations to prasad distribution, making it another remarkable year of the ACMS legacy.

The Workshop on Advances in Microscopy (AIM-2025): Optical Imaging Across the Scales was held on September 4, 2025, by the Advanced Centre for Materials Science (ACMS), IIT Kanpur, in collaboration with the Departments of Materials Science & Engineering (MSE) and Biological Sciences & Bioengineering (BSBE).
The workshop followed a hybrid format to maximize participation. The program was structured into three sessions, featuring expert talks and lab visits. Session 1 was followed by High Tea, Session 2 by Lunch, and Session 3 concluded with the valedictory session and certificate distribution.
The workshop provided a comprehensive overview of recent advances in optical microscopy techniques, with a focus on confocal, super-resolution, light-sheet, and correlative microscopy. In addition to lectures, participants visited cutting-edge imaging facilities at ACMS for hands-on exposure.
The workshop was inaugurated with remarks by Prof. Nitin Mohan, followed by addresses from Prof. Anish Upadhyaya (Head, ACMS), Prof. Kantesh Balani (Head, MSE), Prof. Amitabha Bandyopadhyay (Former Head, BSBE), and Prof. Ashwani Kumar Thakur (Head, BSBE).
Keynote lectures were delivered by Prof. Nitin Mohan (Coordinator, BSBE, IITK), Prof. Rakesh Kumar Majhi and Prof. Dibyendu Kumar Das (BSBE, IITK), Prof. Venkata Jayasurya Yallapragada (Physics, IITK), and Mr. Rishi Kant (Zeiss India). Topics covered included fluorescence-based imaging, challenges in non-adherent cell microscopy, confocal imaging in live cells, optical studies of light emitters and scatterers, and single-molecule imaging in virology research.
The event successfully brought together experts, researchers, and students, fostering knowledge exchange and hands-on learning in the field of advanced microscopy.
