🎓 Farewell 2026 – Department of Civil Engineering, IIT Kanpur 🎓
The Department of Civil Engineering bid a warm and memorable farewell to the graduating batch on 17th April 2026. The day was beautifully organized in two parts – a formal ceremony followed by a lively informal gathering.
The formal farewell, organized by the Society of Civil Engineers, was a heartfelt celebration of the students’ academic journey. The event featured:
✨ Memento distribution to all graduating students
📸 An official batch photoshoot with faculty members
👔 Elegant formal attire adding to the grace of the occasion
It was a proud and emotional moment as students gathered with their professors, capturing memories that will last a lifetime.
The celebrations continued with the informal farewell at the Outreach Auditorium, where the graduating batch came together for an evening filled with joy, laughter, and unforgettable moments. 🎉
As we share glimpses from the event, we extend our best wishes to all our graduating students for a bright and successful future ahead. You will always remain an integral part of the CE family!

🌊 Devendra K. Shukla 1967 Distinguished Lecture | Department of Civil Engineering, IIT Kanpur 🌊
The Department of Civil Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur, successfully hosted the prestigious Devendra K. Shukla 1967 Distinguished Lecture on 24th March 2026.
We were honored to have T. G. Sitharam, Professor, Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru and former President of the International Association for Coastal Reservoir Research (IACRR), deliver an insightful talk on:
📌 “Coastal Reservoirs for Water Security and Environmental Stewardship: Technology, Innovation and Ideas for Offshore Geotechnologies”
In his engaging lecture, Prof. Sitharam highlighted the transformative potential of coastal reservoirs as a sustainable solution for water scarcity in coastal regions. He emphasized:
• Harnessing surplus monsoon flows that would otherwise drain into the sea
• Reducing dependence on conventional inland dams
• Advances in offshore geotechnologies and geotechnical engineering for safe and resilient infrastructure
• Integration of digital monitoring, adaptive materials, and sediment management
• Promoting environmentally responsible and climate-resilient water resource strategies
The lecture provided valuable insights into how innovative engineering solutions can contribute to water security, climate resilience, and environmental stewardship.
The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from faculty, students, and researchers, followed by an engaging discussion session.

The delegation interacted with Civil Engineering faculty members, exploring avenues for future research collaborations.

🌍 Celebrating International Day of Clean Air for Blue Skies 🌍

We are pleased to share that the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) launched its 2025 Air Quality and Climate Bulletin on 5th September, marking the UN-sanctioned International Day of Clean Air for Blue Skies.

The bulletin features an invited article by Prof. Tarun Gupta IIT Kanpur and his former PhD student Dr. Pradhi Rajeev (Faculty, IIT Patna). Their article highlights the role of aerosols in wintertime fog episodes over the Indo-Gangetic Plains, presenting insights from a decade of impactful research.

This contribution is a meaningful step towards communicating advanced science in simple language for greater public awareness and global dissemination.

🚀 Driving Change for Clean Air and Climate: A Distinguished Lecture at IIT Kanpur! 🚀

We are delighted to share the success of the Distinguished Lecture by Dr. Devendra Shukla, held on 19th March 2025 in the Civil Engineering Department, IIT Kanpur. The event featured an inspiring talk by Ms. Anumita Roychowdhury, Executive Director, Research and Advocacy, Centre for Science and Environment, New Delhi.

The lecture, titled “Driving Change for Clean Air and Climate: Interlinking Solutions for a Scalable Transformation”, was a deep dive into the critical intersection of environmental sustainability, clean air, and climate action. Ms. Roychowdhury’s expertise and visionary approach highlighted innovative strategies to address these pressing global challenges, emphasizing scalable and interconnected solutions.

The session was attended by students, faculty, and researchers, who actively engaged in the discussion, making it a truly enriching experience. Ms. Roychowdhury’s insights left the audience motivated to contribute to a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable future.

Spot admission to PhD program in July 2025 semester
We are inviting applications for admission to our PhD program in July 2025 semester from Civil Engineering B.Tech students from Centrally Funded Technical Institutes (CFTIs).
Eligibility criteria
Any final year Civil Engineering B.Tech. student in a CFTI with a CGPA ≥7.5 (or ≥75%) can apply for spot Ph.D. admission
Application procedure
• Interested candidates are requested to fill the following form:

• Last date for submitting application is January 15th, 2025.
• Shortlisted candidates will be invited for an online interview in early 2025 and possibly a second round of in-person interviews.
