In Kanpur, the festivities kick off on Rang Panchami when people gather on the banks of the Ganga to revel in the spirit of Holi by dousing each other in vibrant colors. This unique celebration is deeply rooted in history, particularly the freedom movement of 1942.

The inception of the Hatia Ganga Fair in Kanpur traces back to 1942. On the day of Holi, young revolutionaries in the area boldly raised the tricolor flag in Hatia Bazaar Rajjan Babu Park, defying British rule, and then gleefully engaged in Holi festivities. This event laid the foundation for the remarkable tradition of celebrating Ganga Mela in Kanpur.
