Heartiest congratulations to Prof. Kantesh Balani, MSE IIT Kanpur, on being elected as a Fellow of the Indian National Science Academy (INSA), effective January 2027. 🎉
A well-deserved recognition of his outstanding contributions to materials science and biomedical research. Warmest congratulations, Prof. Balani! 👏

Heartiest congratulations to Prof. Kantesh Balani, Department of MSE IIT Kanpur, on being elected as Fellow of the Indian National Science Academy -INSA effective January 2027.

Prof. Balani has made outstanding scientific contributions towards engineering and quantifying cellular response (both 'transient' and 'matured' protein attachment on biosurfaces) and achieving multifunctionality (antibacterial, antioxidant, toughness, and multi-length-scale porosity), visualization of protein de-adhesion (via molecular dynamics) on biomaterial surfaces. Prof. Balani also contributed in designing porous and multifunctional Hydroxyapatite/Bioglass-based scaffolds/coatings, and in developing damage-tolerant ultra-high molecular polyethylene composites for biomedical applications.

The award recognizes her innovative approach towards sustainable energy generation and the effective utilization of waste heat, highlighting the potential of thermoelectric technology to contribute to a cleaner and more sustainable future.

🏆 Annual Prof. N. K. Batra Metals & Materials Quiz 2026 | IIT Kanpur

The Indian Institute of Metals (IIM) Kanpur Chapter, in collaboration with the Department of Materials Science and Engineering (MSE), IIT Kanpur, successfully organized the Annual Prof. N. K. Batra Metals & Materials Quiz 2026 on August 22, 2026.

🎓 24 Teams | 12 Schools | Classes XI–XII | Kanpur

The programme began with a welcome address by Prof. Niraj Chawakej, Chair, IIM Kanpur Chapter, who highlighted the role of IIM in promoting innovation in materials and manufacturing. Prof. Kantesh Balani, Head, MSE, IIT Kanpur, welcomed the participants and spoke about the legacy of Prof. N. K. Batra, in whose memory the annual quiz is organized. The inaugural session was anchored by Prof. Nilesh Badwe, Secretary, IIM Kanpur Chapter.

The quiz provided an exciting platform for young minds to explore the fascinating world of Materials & Metallurgical Engineering and understand its relevance to technology and everyday life.

🔬 A major highlight was an engaging lecture by Prof. Monica Katiyar, MSE, IIT Kanpur, on “OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diodes) and Their Role in Our Day-to-Day Life.” Students also got a firsthand glimpse of an OLED-based working gadget developed at IIT Kanpur, connecting materials research with real-world technology.

🔥 After multiple rounds of intense competition, the winners emerged:
