The Department of Mechanical Engineering at Government College of Engineering Kannur (GCEK) successfully conducted a Virtual Alumni Meeting on Friday, October 3, 2025 at 7 pm. The meeting was organized as a pivotal component of the state-level 'Vijnana Keralam' programme and, more specifically, to adhere to recent university directives focused on leveraging alumni resources to significantly boost student placements. The primary agenda was the initiation and registration of alumni as dedicated mentors for current Mechanical Engineering students.
The meeting was designed with the following key objectives:
- To formally launch the Alumni Mentorship Program for Mechanical Engineering students.
- To educate alumni on the critical need for their engagement in enhancing student career readiness and placements.
- To facilitate the registration of successful and experienced alumni as mentors.
- To discuss potential avenues for alumni contribution towards technical skill development, industry collaborations, and placement opportunities.
The virtual meeting witnessed enthusiastic participation from:
1) Head of the Department (HoD)
2) Department Alumni Coordinators and Institute Alumni Coordinators
3) A diverse group of Mechanical Engineering alumni from various batches, currently working in distinguished roles across India and abroad in sectors like core areas, IT, design, public sector undertakings, and entrepreneurship.
The HoD, Mechanical Engineering, welcomed the alumni and emphasized the importance of their role in shaping the future of the department and its students. The HoD detailed the university's mandate to establish a robust alumni mentorship framework under the Vijnana Keralam umbrella.
The Virtual Alumni Meeting on 03/10/2025 marks a significant step forward in strengthening the bond between the Department and its alumni for the collective goal of enhancing student placements and professional development. The Alumni Mentorship Program, launched under the 'Vijnana Keralam' mandate, is expected to provide current students with unparalleled industry exposure and career guidance, ultimately leading to a substantial improvement in placement statistics for the Mechanical Engineering Department.

The OBE AWARENESS PROGRAMMES were designed to introduce students the shift from traditional, content-focused education to an outcomes-focused approach, which is crucial for NBA (National Board of Accreditation) compliance and ensuring graduates possess industry-relevant competencies.
The sessions conducted by Dr. Govindan P, HoD (ME) (on 12/09/25 and 18/09/25) focused on demystifying OBE and its direct impact on student learning and professional careers. Key components discussed included:
- Introduction to OBE
- PEOs, POs and COs
- Emphasizing how the OBE framework equips them with measurable skills that are highly valued by the industry
- Explaining that assessment in an OBE system focuses on measuring the attainment of outcomes rather than just testing memory of content
- Stressing the need for active participation and self-assessment
Expected outcomes for students:
- Increased clarity on OBE
- Motivation for learning
- Better performance
- Preparedness for NBA Accreditation

Dr. Prasad Patnaik B S V, a distinguished expert in Fluid-Structure Interaction and Bio-Fluid Mechanics with applications in cardiovascular and cerebral flows, delivered an insightful session highlighting the critical and indispensable role of Mechanical Engineers in the growth and self-reliance of India's medical device industry. The speaker noted that despite India's growing healthcare sector, the medical device market is heavily reliant on imports (approximately 75%). This presents a huge opportunity for domestic engineering talent. The session concluded with a call for Mechanical Engineering departments to update curricula to include specializations in Biomedical Engineering, Medical Robotics, and Bio-design, preparing graduates with the specific skills required to meet the rapidly expanding needs of the Indian medical device industry.

Engineers' Day Celebration 2025 at the Department of Mechanical Engineering
The objective was to inspire and educate mechanical engineering students about the critical role of engineers in nation-building and to expose them to emerging trends and innovations in various engineering fields.

Mr. Niyas Musthafa, Plant Manager - QA/QC Engineer (mechanical/polymer processing), solve plastic products limited, Kinfra (BALCO UPVC PIPES) delivered a seminar on 'Materials and processes in polymer industry'. He highlighted the importance of interdisciplinary skills, continuous learning, and ethical practices and stressed that modern engineering is not just about technical knowledge but also about problem-solving, teamwork, and social responsibility.
The event was a resounding success, achieving its goals of inspiring the student community and providing them with a deeper understanding of the evolving landscape of engineering. It successfully paid tribute to Sir M. Visvesvaraya's legacy by reinforcing the values of dedication, innovation, and service to society.

Career Pathway Training Program for Mechanical Engineering Students
Department of Mechanical Engineering organized an online training programme on "Exploring Career Pathway" by Er. R. Nirmal, Senior Design Engineer, QDOS Flex circuit Sdn Bhd, Penang, Malaysia on 31/08/2025 at 3.00 pm IST.
The career pathway training program aimed to bridge the gap between academic education and professional practice, equipping students with technical, professional and soft skills needed for successful careers in Mechanical Engineering. The training program also aimed to align mechanical engineering education with industry demands. fostering employability and career readiness. The focus of the programme was on the following:
- Career exploration
- Industry alignment, and
- Skill development
The program provided a structured approach to developing the skills and experiences needed for successful careers. 37 students from Mechanical Engineering Department have participated in the training programme.

Engineering students may face stress due to academic work, deadlines and competitive environment. An awareness program was conducted for newly admitted B. Tech Mechanical Engineering students (2025-2029 batch) titled 'How to manage stress as an engineering student' on 25/08/2025. The program aimed to:
- Equip students with practical tools to manage academic and personal stress
- Reduce anxiety and stress related to new academic environment
- Enhance time management and coping skills to improve academic performance
The session was handled by Dr. Govindan P, Head of the Department, Mechanical Engineering. The program addressed key stressors identified in engineering education. The program demonstrated the value of embedding wellness into academic environment. Continued refinement and support are essential to sustain its impact and create a healthier engineering education culture.
