Maharshi Pāṇini (ca. 500 BCE)

"Pāṇini is the Indian Euclid."

- Frits Staal (1930-2012)

Staal specialized in the study of Vedic ritual and mantras, and the scientific exploration of ritual and mysticism. He was also a scholar of Greek and Indian logic and philosophy as well as one of the greatest recent scholars of Pāṇini's Sanskrit grammar.

According to Staal, Maharshi Pāṇini (ca. 500 BCE) showed how to extend spoken Sanskrit to a formal metalanguage for the language itself. Staal argued that the ancient Indian grammarians, especially Pāṇini, had completely mastered methods of linguistic theory not rediscovered again until the 1950s (!) and the applications of modern mathematical logic to linguistics by Noam Chomsky. (Chomsky himself has said that the first generative grammar in the modern sense was Pāṇini's grammar).

In 1975, a consortium of scholars led by Frits Staal documented the twelve-day performance, in Panjal village, Kerala, of the Vedic Agnicayana ritual. It was thought possible that this would be the last ever performance of the ritual, but it has since been revived.

His more recent study was concerned with Greek and Vedic geometry. He drew a parallel between geometry and linguistics.

Staal studied mathematics, physics and philosophy at the University of Amsterdam. He then studied Indian philosophy at the University of Madras and Benares Hindu University, securing a PhD from the University of Madras. He became a Professor of General and Comparative Philosophy in Amsterdam (1962–67) and then became Professor of Philosophy and South Asian Languages at the University of California, Berkeley, in 1968.

Apart from several books, he also wrote more than 150 articles on Sanskrit, philosophy of language and history of science.

Throughout his life, Frits Staal campaigned for the preservation of Vedic culture and the study of Pāṇini's grammar as the key to opening the door to Vedic culture.

"ஆற்றி லிருந்து விளையாடு வோங்களை,
சேற்றா லெறிந்து வளைதுகில் கைக்கொண்டு,
காற்றிற் கடியனாய் ஓடி யகம்புக்கு,
மாற்றமும் தாரானா லின்று முற்றும்,
வளைத்திறம் பேசானா லின்று முற்றும். "

“...ஆயர்சிறுவன்! அவன் கையில் உள்ளதடி நம் ஆடைகளெல்லாம்!” என்று சம்பகலதை கூவினாள். மீன்கூட்டம் துள்ளி விழுவதுபோல உடல் மறைத்த பெண்கள் நீரில் பாய்ந்து விழுமொலி கேட்டாள் ராதை.

“கண்ணா, ஆடைகளை கொடுக்க மாட்டாயா? நீ கோகுலத்தில் நாங்கள் கைகளில் எடுத்த குழந்தை அல்லவா? எங்கள் கையால் அமுதுண்டவனல்லவா?” என்றாள் விசாகை. ரங்கதேவி “அவனிடம் என்னடி பேச்சு? மூழ்கி ஒரு கல்லெடுத்து வீசி அவனை வீழ்த்துங்கள்” எனக்கூவினாள்.

நீரை அள்ளி அவனை நோக்கி வீசிய சம்பகலதை தன் இளமுலை அசைவை தானே உணர்ந்து சிரித்து நீரில் மூழ்கிக்கொண்டாள்.

கல்லெடுத்து வீசப்போன ரங்கதேவி கைதூக்கியதுமே தானும் அமிழ்ந்தாள். சிரித்து “அதற்கு அவனை இரு கைகூப்பி வணங்குவதே சிறந்தது” என்றாள் லசிகை. “போடி, அவன் இன்னும் சிறு மைந்தன்” என்று காதம்பரி அவள் தலைமுடியை பிடித்திழுத்தாள்.

“கண்ணா, கைதூக்கி உன்னை இறைஞ்சுகிறோம். ஆடைகளை அளிப்பாயா?” என்றாள் விசாகை. “என்னடி சொல்கிறாய்?” என்று சினந்தாள் ரங்கதேவி. “விரும்பாவிட்டால் நீ இங்கேயே நில்” என்று சொல்லி லலிதை “கரியோனே, உன் மலராடலுக்கு வசந்தமெழுந்த பெருங்காடும் போதாதா? என்னதான் எண்ணுகிறாய்?” என்று கூவினாள்.

“கைகூப்பி அடிபணியுங்கள். உங்கள் ஆடைகளை அடைவீர்” என்றான் கண்ணன். “ஆடையின்றி நோக்கி நீ அடைவதுதான் என்ன?” என்று சினந்து கேட்டாள் ரங்கதேவி. கண்களில் குறுநகை ஒளிர “கண்கள்” என்றான் கண்ணன்.

தலைமேலே கைகூப்பி கோபியர் நீர்விட்டெழுந்துவர கூவிநகைத்து ஆடையள்ளி வீசி மறுபுறம் குதித்தோடி மறைந்தான். அவன் சென்றவழியில் அசைந்த புதரிலைகள் நாவசைத்துச் சொன்ன ஒருசொல்லை அவள் கேட்டாள்.

“நெறியிலாதான். நாணிலாதான். குழலிசைத்தால் எல்லாமே கைவருமென்று எண்ணும் அறிவிலாதான்” என்று ரங்கதேவி சினந்து சொன்னாள். “அவன் அன்னையிடம் சொல்லி அறிவுறுத்தவேண்டும்” என்றாள்.

“எதைச்சொல்வாய்? அவன் கண்களையா, குழலையா, இல்லை அவன் அறிந்த நம் ஆடையற்ற கண்களையா?” என்றாள் லலிதை..."

One of the most exquisitely carved temples of Tamilnadu, the NINDRA NAMBI PERUMAL ( நின்ற நம்பி பெருமாள் ) Temple is one of the 108 Divya desam (Vaishnavite - Hindu temples that are sacred for Lord Vishnu) and was sung (Mangalasasanam) by four Azhwars(Vaishnavite saints), namely Thirumazhisai Azhwar, Nammazhwar, Periazhwar and Thirumangai Azhwar.

The inscriptions on the temple walls tell the early constructions date back to 10th century CE.

But most of the present architecture and sculpture works were done by Nayak rulers (15th-16th century CE).
