Wayanad Climate Report 2025–26 Released; Community Monitoring Highlights Rainfall Extremes and Climate Risks.
Wayanad Pre-Monsoon Meeting Held; 2025–26 Climate Report Released
Kalpetta: Wayanad Pre-Monsoon Meeting was organized by the Hume Centre for Ecology and Wildlife Biology in collaboration with the Keystone Foundation and TAPCO Agro Producers Company. The event focused on climate change, monsoon preparedness, agricultural planning, and disaster risks, and also witnessed the release of the Wayanad Climate Report 2025–26.
The report was prepared using data collected through the community-based weather monitoring network established by the Hume Centre. Wayanad district was divided into 108 grids of 25 square kilometres each, and hyper-local weather data were analyzed to understand rainfall distribution, intensity, spatial variability, and temperature patterns across the district.
According to the report, the Southwest Monsoon, which began on 24 May 2025, brought widespread and intense rainfall to the district. The highest rainfall was recorded in the western highland regions, including Thondernad, Thavinhal, Vellamunda, Vythiri, and Meppadi.
During 2025–26, the highest annual rainfall in the district was recorded at Mattilayam in Thondernad Panchayat (6,672 mm), followed by Lakkidi in Vythiri Panchayat (6,264 mm). In contrast, Kolavally in Mullankolly Panchayat received the lowest annual rainfall, recording only 724 mm. The findings highlight the sharp rainfall contrast between the western mountainous regions and the eastern rain-shadow areas of Wayanad.
The report also noted clear seasonal variations in temperature. Minimum temperature prevailed during the monsoon months, while summer was significantly warmer. July recorded the lowest average maximum temperature (24.4°C) in the district. April 2026 was the hottest month, with an average maximum temperature of 32.9°C. In December, temperatures dropped to as low as 14°C in some areas. The study found that topography, elevation, forest cover, and local microclimatic conditions strongly influence rainfall and temperature distribution across Wayanad.
Report Release
The meeting was chaired by C.K. Vishnu Das, Director of the Hume Centre. He announced that the community-based weather monitoring initiative has already expanded to Kannur, Balussery Block Panchayat (Kozhikode), Pothukal Panchayat (Malappuram), Vellangallur Block Panchayat (Thrissur), Ernakulam, and Idukki districts. Efforts have also begun to extend the programme to all districts of Kerala during the upcoming monsoon season.
The Wayanad Climate Report 2025–26 was released by P.J. Manuel, CEO of Nattarivu Study Centre, and received by farmer Radha Nambiar. T.C. Joseph, member of the Wayanad Biodiversity Management Committee, offered felicitations.
Rafi, Additional Programme Coordinator of the Keystone Foundation, spoke about the foundation’s climate change initiatives. Akhil Sivadas, Climate Change Programme Coordinator, conducted a session on Monitoring, Reporting and Verification (MRV) approaches involving local communities.
Vrinda, Research Assistant at TAPCO Agro Producers Company, presented the agricultural calendar. Dr. M.G. Manoj from the Advanced Centre for Atmospheric Radar Research (ACARR), CUSAT, delivered a lecture on Kerala’s monsoon system and the impacts of climate change.
Community weather observers K. Rajagopalan, Unnikrishnan S., and Divakaran Mangalassery shared rainfall and weather observations from their respective regions. Students Safeela Nasrin and Rusha Fathima from GHSS Meppadi presented their experiences related to rainfall. Climate Cadets Insa Fathima and Keerthana presented a study on different cloud types and their relationship with rainfall.
Renjini A.R., Team Lead at the Hume Centre, presented the detailed climate analysis for Wayanad during 2025–26. Representatives from the Kerala Emergency Team, Churam Samrakshana Samithi, Civil Defence, community weather observers, farmers, various organizations, and students attended the event.
The programme began with a welcome address by Answaf Aman, Research Assistant at the Hume Centre, and concluded with a vote of thanks by Arjun, Research Assistant.
The meeting emphasized the importance of community-based weather monitoring at a time when the risks of extreme rainfall, landslides, floods, droughts, and other climate-related disasters are increasing. Participants noted that integrating scientific research with local knowledge can strengthen disaster preparedness, agricultural planning, water resource management, and environmental conservation efforts.
