The children at the reading club had read a thought provoking picture book - Dinosaurs and all that rubbish, written by Michael Foreman.

The book introduces children and adults alike to ideas about valuing our world and sharing it with all living things.

The main character, the man is anxious to reach the stars, the book represents mankind as a whole and what we are doing to the world in our ceaseless quest for power and technology.

What would happen if all living things are destroyed in the process? Maybe, just maybe, below the Earth’s surface are the dinosaurs really waiting to reclaim the Earth!?! This story led to lots of thinking and discussion and some art work by children.

Creating awareness through puppets and stories for PG students of St. Teresa’s College…

It was in 2019 that I was first invited to conduct workshops on the ‘Storytelling for Creating Awareness’ in classrooms module for Post Graduate students of the Department of Home Science and Centre for Research, St. Teresa’s College, Ernakulam.

In this third year of in-person workshop for college; making and using puppets as Teaching Learning Material, using easily/readily available waste materials at home to reinforce oral communication and create awareness among young children was introduced.

What an engaging full-day workshop with enthusiastic students; they were on a roll creating stories with the puppets they made!

The students made a few rod puppets- Crocodile puppets for an engaging ‘Oral Hygiene’ story. Caterpillar puppets for 'Health and Nutrition,' brown paper bag animal puppets for 'Habitats.' The two-in-one puppet on the 'Safety of young children' and the beautiful witch puppet on 'Traffic Safety' were presented by the students at the end of the workshop.

Yesterday we read this book about a boy who felt invisible. He never got picked for games, teachers didn’t notice him because he was quiet, he didn’t have friends, and he wished he would be seen. It has a very powerful message on being kind, including others, and also on others not taking all the attention. Our class lives by the golden rule and after reading this book we decided to make a goal to watch for and help out “the invisible” ones. 💕
