CONDOLENCE NOTE: THINGNAM NILAKAMAL SINGH (KAKCHING KOMOL)
--------------------
The Kakching Khunou Educational Forum expresses its profound grief and deep sorrow at the untimely demise of Shri Thingnam Nilakamal Singh, fondly known as “Kakching Komol”, who passed away on 16th April 2026 after a prolonged illness.
Born on 17th March 1955 to Shri Thingnam Manglemjao Singh and Smt. Mayanglambam Madhabi (Madha) Devi of Kakching Khunou Angom Leikai , late Nilakamal Singh was the eldest among four brothers and three sisters. From a very young age, he showed an extraordinary inclination towards Jatrawali, the traditional courtyard theatre of Manipur.
His journey in performing arts began remarkably early, making his debut as a child artiste at the age of 8 in the play “Maya gi Sansar” under the Kakching Khunou Dramatic Union. By the age of 16, he rose to prominence when he performed the female lead role of “Memthoibi” at City Jatra Mandal, a portrayal so captivating that it earned him the affectionate title “Memthoibi Sabi.”
Over the years, he became a towering figure in both Jatrawali and Sumang Lila, contributing immensely through his association with renowned groups such as City Jatra Mandal, Southern Jatra Mandal, Time Star Artistes’ Union, and Naharol Khongthang Artistes’ Association (Chakthekpi Party). He had a long and successful career, with many well-known performances that won him as many as eight State Awards for Female Lead roles.
Late Nilakamal Singh delivered countless memorable performances in plays such as Sajibugi Nonglei, Kali gi Krishna, Chaobhanpa gi Mamou, Nangtani Ko Imounupi, Ashangba Nongjabi, Nongmagi Wathok, Lanbunggi Pungkhol, Meeotpi, Gamlathakki Thambal, Thokkhraba Wathok, Arabki Leirang, Kangkhraba Ichelgi Torban, Lamlakki Chekla, Nungshi Mapao Takhidraba, Mahoushagi Meenok, Bhalo’i Pemma, Triveni Sangam, and Ee Thaklaba Kangla Sha. His final stage appearance was in the play “Phirep” under Apunba Artistes’ Association (AAA), where he portrayed the role of a Leishabi Aribi.
Throughout his career, he portrayed a wide range of characters—from female leads to negative roles and later comic roles—demonstrating remarkable adaptability and artistic depth.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Smt. Thingnam Ongbi Mayanglambam Chaoba Devi, and his children.
The passing of Nilakamal is an irreparable loss not only to his family but also to the entire fraternity of Jatrawali and Sumang Lila. His legacy will continue to inspire generations of artistes and theatre lovers.
The Kakching Khunou Educational Forum extends its heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and prays for the eternal peace of the departed soul.
May his soul rest in peace.
