Chair जिसे हम हिंदी में कुर्सी बोलते हैं, घर या office की एक सामान्य वस्तु है। इसके बिना कही बैठने की परिकल्पना करना ही मुश्किल है। पर ये कुर्सियां भी अपने उपयोगों के आधार पर अलग अलग नामों से जानी जाती है। जैसे -

armchair (हत्थेदार कुर्सी/ आरामकुर्सी/ बंहदार कुर्सी)

rocking chair (दोलन या झूली कुर्सी)

car chair (बच्चों के लिए कार में प्रयॊग होने वाली कुर्सी)

swivel chair (घूमनेवाली कुर्सी जो साधारणतयः offices में पायी जाती है)

lounger (लम्बी आरामकुर्सी)

wheel chair (पहियेदार कुर्सी, जो व्यक्ति चलने में असमर्थ हो, उसके लिए ये कुर्सियां लाभकारी है)

recliners (विश्राम करानेवाली कुर्सी an armchair whose back can be lowered and foot can be raised to allow the sitter to recline in it)

high chair ( ऊँची कुर्सी - छोटे बच्चों को बैठा कर खाना खिलाने के लिए)

chaise lounge (आराम कुर्सी)

sofa (सोफा - इसे couch भी कहते हैं)

deck chair (डेक कुर्सी या folding chair)

bench (बेंच - जो प्रायः parks में देखने को मिलती है)

director's chair (निर्देशक की कुर्सी)

stool (स्टूल या मचिया)

गर्मी शुरू हो गई है। आइए heat (गर्मी) से सम्बंधित कुछ idioms जानें -

put the heat on (someone) – to put pressure on someone to act (किसी पर कुछ करने का दबाव डालना)

Environmental groups are putting the heat on the government to stop pollution from power stations. (पर्यावरण समूह बिजली स्टेशनों से प्रदूषण को रोकने के लिए सरकार पर दबाव डाल रहे हैं।)

take the heat – to accept criticism or scolding (आलोचना/ डांट स्वीकार करना)

All the employees took the heat from the manager for less production. (सभी कर्मचारियों ने कम उत्पादन के लिए प्रबंधक की आलोचना स्वीकार की।)

heat up (something) – to become more active (अधिक सक्रिय बनना)

Her report has heated up debate on how the president should behave. (उसकी रिपोर्ट ने इस बहस को सक्रिय कर दिया है कि राष्ट्रपति को कैसे व्यवहार करना चाहिए।)

heat up - to get warmer or hot (अधिक गर्म करना)

Let's see what happens when I heat this metal up. (देखते हैं क्या होता है जब मैं इस धातु को गर्म करता हूँ।)

heat someone up - to make someone angry (किसी को गुस्सा दिलाना)

Kapil's behaviour really heated Sunil up. (कपिल के व्यवहार ने वास्तव में सुनील को गुस्सा दिलाया।)

hot off the press – very recent, as in a news story (हाल ही में, समाचार के रूप में)

Here is a copy of the new Harry Potter novel. It's hot off the press. (यह नई हैरी पॉटर उपन्यास की एक प्रति है। यह न्यूज़ में है।)

[Wrong: to lose]

Imagine: I can’t imagine living without you. (मैं आपके बिना जीवित रहने की कल्पना नहीं कर सकता)

Help: He can't help talking so loudly. (वह इतना जोर से बात करने से अपने आप को नहीं रोक सकता।)

Fancy: Do you fancy going to the movie with us tonight? (क्या आप आज रात हमारे साथ फिल्म जाना पसंद करेंगे?)

Practice: I practice singing daily. (मैं हर रोज़ गायन अभ्यास करता हूँ।)

Recommend: I recommend practicing the song daily. (मैं गीत का रोज़ाना अभ्यास करने की सलाह देती हूँ।

Prefix (उपसर्ग) anti- की उत्पत्ति ग्रीक शब्द से हुई है जिसका अर्थ against (विरुद्ध) या opposite (विपरीत) होता है। जैसे -

anti → opposite/ against

Antidote → remedy given ‘against’ a poison (विष नाशक)

Antithesis → exact opposite (विपरीत)

Antipathy → a feeling of intense dislike (सहज-विरोधी)

Antibiotic → drug given ‘against’ the life-form bacteria which has invaded a body (प्रतिजैविक)

Antifreeze → a liquid used ‘against’ the freezing of cars’ engines (हिमनिरोधी)

Antisocial → of going ‘against’ being social (असामाजिक)

Anticlimax → a disappointing decline after a previous rise (दुखान्त)

Antiseptic → thoroughly clean and free of disease-causing organisms (रोगाणु रोधक)

Antihero → a protagonist who does not act brave or morally good (एन्टीहिरो)

Anti-inflammatory → a medicine intended to reduce swelling (प्रज्वलनरोधी)
