may look common and disgusting, but their structure and survival skills are truly amazing.
Here are 10 things most people don't know about cockroaches:
10 Surprising Facts About Cockroaches
Surviving for a Week Without a Head: A cockroach can survive for almost a week even after its head is cut off! This is because they don't breathe through their mouths, but through small holes (spiracles) on their bodies. After a week, they die not from pain or suffocation, but from thirst (because without a mouth, they can't drink water).
They're Older Than Dinosaurs: Cockroaches have existed on Earth for approximately 320 million years. This means they witnessed both the birth and extinction of dinosaurs, and have survived in every difficult environment.
Masters of breath-holding: A cockroach can hold its breath for about 40 minutes and survive underwater for about half an hour. They often hold their breath to conserve water.
Feet Have a 'Brain': Cockroaches' nervous systems are spread throughout their bodies. Their legs contain clusters of nerves (ganglia). This means that as soon as they sense danger, their legs take action to flee even before the brain receives a signal.
Extraordinary Ability to Withstand Radiation: Cockroaches are many times more likely to survive a nuclear blast than humans. They can withstand 6 to 15 times more radiation than humans.
Mating Only Once in a Lifetime: Some female cockroaches only need to mate once in their entire lives. They store s***m and use it to lay eggs throughout their lives.
They don't have red blood: Unlike humans, their blood doesn't contain hemoglobin. Therefore, cockroach blood is colorless. However, a special protein in pregnant female cockroaches can cause the blood to appear light orange or yellow.
They can squeeze through narrow cracks: A cockroach's exoskeleton is so flexible that it can shrink itself through a crack or hole as narrow as one-fourth its body height.
Super-fast speed: A small cockroach can run at a speed of about 3 mph (about 4.8 km/h). Compared to a human's size, this speed would be equivalent to a human running at 320 km/h!
They can eat anything: Cockroaches are omnivores. If they don't find food, they eat paper, plastic , hair, soap, bookbinding glue, dead insects, and even their own old skin. They can survive for up to a month without food.
