Post-Translational Modification (PTM):
Post-translational modification refers to the chemical changes that occur in proteins after they have been synthesized by ribosomes during translation. These modifications play a crucial role in regulating the structure, function, stability, and activity of proteins. PTMs can alter the physical and chemical properties of proteins, enabling them to perform specific functions or interact with other molecules effectively.
Common types of PTMs include:
Phosphorylation: Addition of phosphate groups to amino acids like serine, threonine, or tyrosine, often regulating protein activity or signaling pathways.
Glycosylation: Attachment of sugar moieties to asparagine or serine/threonine residues, affecting protein folding, stability, and cell signaling.
Acetylation: Addition of acetyl groups, usually on lysine residues, influencing gene expression and protein interactions.
Ubiquitination: Covalent attachment of ubiquitin to lysine residues, marking proteins for degradation.
Methylation: Addition of methyl groups, commonly involved in epigenetic regulation and protein-protein interactions.
