HISTORY DEPARTMENT CELEBRATES INTERNATIONAL TEA DAY
Jorhat, May 21, 2025: The History Department of Jorhat College, in collaboration with the Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) and the Quiz & Heritage Club, celebrated International Tea Day 2025 with great enthusiasm today. The event highlighted the rich legacy and cultural significance of the tea industry in India, with a special focus on Assam’s pivotal role.
The program was inaugurated by Dr. Gitartha Goswami, Coordinator of IQAC, Jorhat College, who provided insightful remarks on the 200-year history of India’s tea industry. He emphasized its contributions to the nation’s economy and global identity. Mr. Raktimjyoti Hazarika, Head of the Department of History and a PhD scholar in the food history of Assam, delivered a compelling address on the multidimensional aspects of the tea industry. He described tea as “the real diamond” of Assam and India, noting that the discovery of tea in Assam’s jungles in 1823 brought the region into the global spotlight. Mr. Hazarika stressed the need for academic discourse to shift from the traditional focus on tea planters and workers’ relations to broader themes like sustainability and cultural impacts. He also highlighted how tea has transformed India’s food culture and public sphere through the rise of tea parties and tea stalls.
The students of the Quiz and Heritage Club enriched the event by presenting vintage advertisements from colonial-era tea companies in Assam and India, offering a glimpse into the industry’s historical marketing strategies. Adding to the vision for future academic endeavors, Dr. Soumitra Puzari announced that Jorhat College plans to establish a Tea Research Centre to conduct extensive studies on various facets of the tea industry, including its historical, cultural, and sustainable dimensions.
