Here is why:

1. The metronome click forces you to pay attention to playing in time instead of controlling your guitar technique.

And this makes it much harder to fix the root causes of your flailing fingers and get your fingers to do what you want them to do.

2. You sometimes need to slow way down even below the slowest tempo of the metronome to improve your finger independence. (Whether or not you need to do this depends on the severity of your finger independence issues.)

Want to master sweep picking? Don't make the mistake of ONLY focusing on speed. Use sweep picking to ‘enhance’ the musical quality of your lead guitar phrases by emphasizing the highest notes in your arpeggios with other techniques such as slides or vibrato.
