Youth-Led Awareness Campaign against Substance Abuse

The National Service Scheme (NSS), MY Bharat volunteers of Balagarh Bijoy Krishna Mahavidyalaya organised a youth-led awareness campaign against substance abuse on 30 August 2026 as part of the ongoing Nasha Mukt Bharat (Drug-Free India) Campaign. The initiative focused particularly on sensitising young men and women in the volunteers’ respective local communities about the destructive physical, psychological, social and educational consequences of substance abuse.

Objectives

The principal objective of the programme was to create awareness among young people about the devastating consequences of substance abuse and encourage them to adopt healthy, responsible and productive lifestyles. The campaign also aimed to strengthen peer awareness, social responsibility and meaningful youth participation in building a drug-free community.

Programme

During the outreach programme, NSS MY Bharat volunteers visited their respective localities and interacted directly with young men and women. The volunteers distributed specially prepared awareness leaflets highlighting the harmful consequences of substance abuse, including its adverse effects on physical and mental health, education, family life, career prospects and social well-being.

Through personal interaction, discussion and awareness-building activities, the volunteers encouraged young people to stay away from addictive substances and to make informed and responsible choices in life. They also urged the youth to become active participants and ambassadors of the Nasha Mukt Bharat movement and to spread the message of a healthy and addiction-free lifestyle within their communities.

Introduction

As part of its commitment to the vision of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and its emphasis on Indian Knowledge Systems (IKS), the National Service Scheme (NSS) of Balagarh Bijoy Krishna Mahavidyalaya has undertaken an online heritage documentation initiative entitled “Exploring Heritage”. Launched on 1 August 2026, during the sacred month of India’s Independence, the project seeks to rediscover and digitally disseminate the forgotten legacy of the freedom fighters of Hooghly district before a wider global audience.

The 31st Heritage of Hooghly’s Pride under this initiative commemorates Freedom Fighter Mriganbala Ray, one of the notable women associated with the history of the freedom movement in the Arambagh subdivision of Hooghly.

Born into the Hazra family of Nandanpur village under Khanakul Police Station, Mriganbala Ray received institutional education during her early years and was married to Haradhan Ray. When the Civil Disobedience Movement spread across Hooghly in 1930, she actively joined the struggle. During the Dongal Movement, she provided shelter, food and care to homeless Congress volunteers, demonstrating remarkable courage and compassion.

Her contribution extended beyond personal participation. She inspired and guided her three sons—Harin arayan, Balaichandra and Krishnanarayan—to take an active role in the freedom struggle. All three faced police brutality and imprisonment for their participation in the national movement.

Educational Initiative under NSS Regular Activities

“Biplabi Bhupati Majumdar Pathshala”

The National Service Scheme (NSS) Unit of Balagarh Bijoy Krishna Mahavidyalaya conducted a regular educational session of “Biplabi Bhupati Majumdar Pathshala” on 30 August 2026 for the children of brick kiln workers residing in the adopted village. Conducted every Sunday, this sustained educational initiative seeks to provide continuous learning support to disadvantaged children and facilitate their gradual integration into mainstream education.

Objectives

The programme aimed to strengthen the children's foundational literacy and numeracy, develop regular study habits, and create awareness regarding personal hygiene, healthy living, environmental protection, social values and the importance of education. It also sought to nurture confidence, creativity, active participation and a sense of social responsibility among the children.

Programme

The session was conducted in an open-air classroom under a tree at the adopted brick kiln area. Approximately 20 children participated enthusiastically under the guidance of nearly 10 NSS volunteers. Learner-centred and activity-based teaching methods were adopted, incorporating reading, writing, basic arithmetic, storytelling, drawing, rhymes, educational games and group activities.

Alongside academic learning, the NSS volunteers engaged the children in awareness activities relating to personal cleanliness, healthy habits, environmental responsibility and social values. The informal and participatory learning environment encouraged the children to express themselves freely and participate actively in the learning process.

Outcome

The session strengthened the children's interest in education and contributed to the development of their basic reading, ।

Tree Plantation in Memory of Revolutionary Jadugopal Mukhopadhyay

As part of the Manishicharcha Scheme of the National Service Scheme, Balagarh Bijoy Krishna Mahavidyalaya observed the death anniversary of Revolutionary Jadugopal Mukhopadhyay (18 September 1886–30 August 1976) through a meaningful tree plantation programme in the Balagarh region.

Jadugopal Mukhopadhyay was one of the remarkable figures of the anti-colonial movement in India and an important leader of the Anushilan Samiti. A distinguished physician, revolutionary organiser, writer and connoisseur of classical music, he maintained close associations with revolutionary leaders such as Bagha Jatin, Aurobindo Ghose, M. N. Roy and Matilal Roy. As a leading figure of the Jugantar movement, he eventually advocated the transformation of revolutionary energies into a broader mass movement through the Indian National Congress.

The programme sought to transform remembrance into responsible action. NSS volunteers planted saplings to honour his memory while reflecting upon the values of courage, discipline, service and dedication embodied in his life.

Objective

To acquaint young volunteers with the life and ideals of a forgotten revolutionary and inspire them to regard the lives of great personalities as a resource for character formation, while encouraging environmental responsibility in the face of global warming.

Outcome

The programme connected historical memory with environmental action. Volunteers gained an opportunity to learn from Jadugopal Mukhopadhyay’s life while contributing, however modestly, to a greener and more sustainable Balagarh. Thus, the tree became both a living memorial and a symbol of responsible citizenship.

Tree Plantation in Memory of Kazi Nazrul Islam

As part of the Manishicharcha Scheme of the National Service Scheme, Balagarh Bijoy Krishna Mahavidyalaya observed the death anniversary of Kazi Nazrul Islam (24 May 1899–29 August 1976) through a meaningful programme of tree plantation in the Balagarh region.

Kazi Nazrul Islam, popularly known as the “Rebel Poet,” was one of the foremost Bengali poets, writers, dramatists, musicians and cultural personalities of the twentieth century. His remarkably productive literary career, though spanning only about twenty-three years, enriched Bengali literature with poetry, songs, fiction, drama and powerful expressions of freedom, equality and human dignity. He is the National Poet of Bangladesh. His life and writings continue to inspire young people to resist injustice, cultivate courage and uphold human values.

The programme sought to transform remembrance into constructive action. NSS volunteers planted saplings on the occasion of his death anniversary, symbolising the continuity of life, ideals and social responsibility. Through the Manishicharcha Scheme, the volunteers were encouraged to regard the lives and ideals of great personalities as a source of inspiration for character formation.

Objectives

1. To introduce volunteers to Nazrul’s life, ideals and contributions.
2. To promote environmental responsibility through tree plantation.
3. To connect heritage-consciousness with sustainable social action.
4. To encourage young volunteers to translate remembrance into service.

Outcomes

The programme strengthened historical and cultural awareness among volunteers while encouraging practical environmental responsibility. It conveyed a simple message: remembering a great soul becomes more meaningful when his memory inspires action for society and nature.

Introduction
Balagarh Bijoy Krishna Mahavidyalaya, through its National Service Scheme (NSS), has initiated the online heritage documentation project “Exploring Heritage” in the spirit of the Indian Knowledge Systems (IKS) perspective of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. Beginning on 1 August 2026, the project seeks to identify, document and disseminate the lesser-known heritage of Hooghly district associated with India’s freedom struggle.
The project considers heritage not merely as monuments and material objects, but also as the memory of people, places, sacrifices and struggles that constitute the historical consciousness of a region. Through the online medium, the institution seeks to take these local histories beyond geographical boundaries and make them accessible to people across India and the world.
The 30th heritage contribution of the project is dedicated to Tinkori Mukhopadhyay, a revolutionary of the Agni Yug and a participant in the anti-British freedom movement.
Tinkori Mukhopadhyay: Life and Early Education
Tinkori Mukhopadhyay, also known as Tinkori Mukherjee, was born in 1913 at Natibpur village under Khanakul Police Station in Hooghly district. He was the son of Kalipada Mukhopadhyay and Shobharani Mukhopadhyay.
His early education began at the village pathshala at Natibpur. During his youth, he became attracted to the nationalist activities centred around the Rathatala of Nandanpur, Khanakul, where a revolutionary and freedom-fighter camp had dev

Report on College Campus Cleaning and Plastic Cleanup Activity

Objective

The primary objectives of the programme were to clean and maintain the college campus in a systematic manner, remove plastic waste and other litter from different areas, create awareness among students about the harmful effects of plastic pollution, promote responsible waste disposal and waste segregation, reduce the use of single-use plastic, and develop a sense of cleanliness, environmental responsibility and civic consciousness among NSS volunteers and students.

Report

On 29 August 2026, the “Kazi Nazrul Environment Protection Force”, an environmental initiative under the National Service Scheme (NSS) of Balagarh Bijoy Krishna Mahavidyalaya, organised a College Campus Cleaning and Plastic Cleanup Programme on the college premises.

A team of NSS volunteers actively participated in the cleanliness drive with enthusiasm, dedication and a strong sense of environmental responsibility. The volunteers cleaned different parts of the college campus, including pathways, open spaces and surrounding areas, removing accumulated litter and plastic waste. Special attention was given to collecting plastic wrappers, bottles, packets, polythene bags and other discarded plastic materials.

During the programme, the volunteers highlighted the harmful effects of plastic pollution and encouraged students to avoid littering, reduce the use of single-use plastic and dispose of waste responsibly. The importance of waste segregation and maintaining cleanliness as a regular habit was also emphasised.

As part of the campus-cleaning activity, the NSS volunteers also cleaned and maintained the statues of eminent personalities situated within the college premises. This small but meaningful effort helped preserve the dignity and cleanliness of the campus.

Introduction

Balagarh Bijoy Krishna Mahavidyalaya, National Service Scheme (NSS), observed National Sports Day on 29 August 2026 to commemorate the birth anniversary of legendary Indian hockey player Major Dhyan Chand. As part of the online initiative, an informative poster highlighting his remarkable contribution to Indian and world hockey was prepared and disseminated among NSS volunteers.

Objective

The primary objectives of the initiative were to remember and honour India's glorious sporting heritage, introduce NSS volunteers to the life and achievements of Major Dhyan Chand, and inspire them towards discipline, dedication, sportsmanship and a strong sense of national pride. The programme also aimed to recognise sport as an important component of India's cultural and national heritage in accordance with the Indian Knowledge Systems (IKS) perspective of the National Education Policy.

Outcome

The online poster successfully created awareness among volunteers about Major Dhyan Chand's extraordinary contribution to Indian hockey and his three consecutive Olympic gold medals.
