This is the story of 1945 when most of the dairy farmers of Gujrat are affected by some problems. They have to sell their milk at lower price to the middle man or contractor of Polson. In 1945 there was only one dairy brand(Polson) with whole monopoly in the market. Polson was a British based company manufacturing its products from a Gujrat based factory.

The condition of these milk farmers was bad and miserable. Farmers share their problem with social activist named Tribhuvan Das Patel than they decided to discuss these problem with prominent leader of that time sardar Vallabhbhai Patel in Gujarat.

Patel give an advise to build a cooperative society and made a strike against these middle man. Farmers make a decision to build an cooperative society(UNION) with the help of Morarji Desai in the Kiara District.

In 1949 on the request of government Dr. Varghese Kurian came to Gujrat to improve dairy industry in India. The person drastically improve the every aspect of this co operative society and turn it into a well established organization.

In 1955 when they are producing enough milk, they decided to launch other milk products like butter and milk powder and but there is a problem with the name Anand(Kiara) milk union limited then they compel in to a short form and make a new brand AMUL.

In 1966 Sylvester da Cunha, came up with the idea of using a character in Amul's advertisements. The Amul Girl's expert to respond quickly to current events. Whether it's a political development, a cultural moment, a sports event, or a movie release, Amul releases new ads with the Amul Girl to stay relevant and engaging.

Amul work at three levels first at village level, it is the initial stage of procurement, second is district level where it is sterilized to increase its self life to make other products after that it is send to the state level to distribute across country.

They focus on providing value to both dairy farmers and the end consumer by providing the quality in the product and right price to the farmers. They have installed electronic fat testing machine for procurement process so that they can easily detect the quality of milk according to the fat stored in it.

Amul invested 80 crore in a setup designed by IBM in 2009 to mange every small detail of operations in supply chain management. This technological advancement helps in accessing the plant capacity, track exact location of trucks.

When R.S. Sodhi become head in June 2010 they focus on scaling rapidly these are the few thing they focus on deliberately like expansion in procurement so that they can collect as much as milk, expansion in processing to increase self life by sterilization and expansion in distribution to increase reach in the areas where it is not available or available in small quantity.

During COVID period other dairy brands is affected so badly but Amul instead of that increase their revenue and sales. As you know that milk comes under essential goods category. In the lockdown period during pandemic different businesses those who depends on dairy products like restaurant, hotels, catering are closed.

They are responsible for 20% sales of these dairy brands as the demand cut down they decrease their production, lot of factory workers and drivers loss their job but the Amul on the other hand doing something different than their competitor and thinking way ahead to understanding the changing demand of the market.

As you know that in crisis consumer behavior will drastically change, the demand of dairy based products which is used mostly at home will increase because most of people have stayed at home and choose home made food because of increasing health awareness.

During this time demand of cheese increased 80%, in which there are 40% cottage cheese and condensed milk increase by 100%, you will be shocked by knowing that all factory of Amul was running at their full capacity during lockdown.

During pandemic Amul launch 35 new products in the market, acquiring extra 35 lakh liter milk every day and paid 800 crore in return to milk farmers of India. In the place of trucks they are using trains during COVID because of lockdown to manage their supply chain.

They take an umbrella approach in their marketing strategy because it helps in cutting the cost of branding and increase sales and revenue by rub of effect. In the COVID period Amul make a revolutionary step and increase their advertising volume up to 316% in comparison of last year.

In 1965 National dairy development board was build by Dr Verghese Kurian to improve the dairy industry in India. In 1970 operation flood was organized by this board, which was the world's largest dairy development program, it transformed India from a milk-deficient nation into the world's largest milk producer.

There are some fact and figures you must know about Amul, dairy farmers are the owner of this brand because 80% of their revenue directly goes to farmers and remaining 20% they spend on milk procurement, milk processing, packaging and distribution network.

Today turn over of the company is more than 72,000 crore, more than 36 lack farmers are directly working from 18,500 villages across India. Amul collects 4.1 crore liter milk per day from the farmers.

Tribhuvan das Patel was awarded the 1963 Ramon Magsaysay Award for 'Community Leadership', together with Dara Nusserwanji Khurody, and Verghese Kurien and the Padma Bhushan from the Govt. of India in 1964.

These are some key business lessons you can learn from this case study try to understand the changing paradigm of consumer behavior during crisis for some brand it is like challenge but for some it is like opportunity to growth.

Second build a robust supply chain management if your product also comes under food category It is really challenging from procurement to process and then to supply end consumer.

Third use robust technology at different stages in your company to increase efficiency, quality of product and reduce cost. And at last you can use umbrella approach in your branding strategy to increase sales and revenue.

Story begins in 1960 when edible oil industry is facing some problems. Due to lack of refined oil people are only dependent on crude oil but the problem with crude oil is that it has bitter taste.

There are no any bigger player that could provide refined oil at large level this is a great opportunity or a gap in the market.

This gap is figured out by mariwala family and they entered in the refined oil market with their brand named Saffola.

Another issue is that crude oil is not good for heart it blocks the heart cell membranes , slowdown the heart beat in long term and become a cause of heart attack.

A research catch attention of harsh mariwala showing that worlds 60% heart disease patients are living in India. if they build product for them it can be a breath taking opportunity to growth.

Saffola focused on the risks of heart disease and how to maintain a healthy heart which set them apart from their competitors in this category

he edible oil market in India was already dominated by well-established brands. Capturing the market share from the established competitors was a considerable challenge.

Competing against these giants required Saffola to differentiate itself and carve out a unique value proposition. Saffola introduce a new category of blended cooking oil in the Indian market.

This is a challenge as consumers were accustomed to traditional cooking oils such as mustard oilgroundnut oil. Creating awareness about the benefits of blended oils and educating consumers about the health advantages was crucial.

Saffola was launched in 1989, and at the time, the edible oil market was dominated by brands like Parachute and Dalda. These brands had been established for many years, and have a strong reputation with consumers.

Saffola was a new brand, and it was not clear whether it would be able to compete with these established brands.

Consumer behavior is often resistant to change, and building trust in a new brand requires consistent messaging and evidence of its efficacy. Convincing consumers to switch from their existing cooking oils to a relatively new and unfamiliar brand was a significant challenge.

The government has imposed a number of regulations on the edible oil industry, such as labeling requirements and restrictions on the use of trans fats.

These regulations have increased the cost of doing business for Saffola and have made it more difficult for the company to market its products.

There are few medical researches came out about describing this fact that sunflower oil is beneficial for health of heart so they build their product also in this category to attract customer affected by heart disease.

To differentiate Saffola from its competitors and communicate its health benefits effectively, the brand invested in extensive research & development.

They conducted clinical studies to prove that Saffola helps in managing cholesterol levels and reducing the risk of heart disease.

The biggest problem every new business face is to build awareness in the beginning face, they use different strategies to build awareness or tackle down this challenge.

Saffola continued to invest in research and development, and it focused on developing new products that met the changing needs of consumers.

They run marketing campaigns to educate consumers about the health advantages of using Saffola. By doing so they build a strong brand image and establish trust with consumers.

They emphasized transparency in their communication, providing detailed information about the oil's composition, health benefits, and manufacturing processes.
Instead of that they enter in the right market it is not enough for their growth they came up with new challenges. They also cater another problem by making a through research that in India oil is supplying through tin containers which does not looks good.

Saffola come with stylish small size bottle so that customer will feel cool while buying the product. After that they come with other products like Saffola oats in different taste and categories.

They invested heavily in marketing and advertising, and they focused on developing innovative products that were healthier than the products offered by their competitors. The company also focused on building strong relationships with its distributors and retailers.

Instead of that they take different initiative for heart patient through their campaigns and NGOs. they conducted different campaign on world health day.

After some preparation enter in the market with a new brand Saffola and now dominating the market with 80% share instead of some big players like ITC and UNILIVER.

Saffola has faced many challenges throughout its journey, but one of the greatest challenge is that the company has faced is the challenge of staying ahead of the competition. However, Saffola management team was determined to succeed.

Saffola efforts paid off. The company's sales started to grow, as on today it eventually became one of the leading edible oil brand in India.

Saffola was awarded the Heart-Check logo by the World Heart Federation in 2007. This logo is a mark of quality for products that meet the World Heart Federation's criteria for heart health.

Saffola was also awarded by the WHO's Seal of Approval for its healthy cooking oils in 2016. This seal is a mark of quality for products that meet the WHO's criteria for heart health. These awards and recognitions are a testament to the company's commitment to providing consumers with healthy and nutritious products.

The edible oil market was constantly changing, and new brands were entering the market all the time. Instead of that the company has been continuously innovating and developing new products that meet the changing needs of consumers. For example, in 2022, Saffola launched a new product called Saffola Total, which is a blend of rice bran and sunflower oil that is specifically designed to help keep hearts healthy.

The company is committed to making a positive impact on the world, and it has a number of CSR initiatives in place. For example, Saffola supports the Saffola Heart Foundation, which works to raise awareness about heart health and provides financial assistance to people with heart disease.

Consumers are becoming more health-conscious, and they are looking for healthier cooking oils. This has increased the demand for oils with high monounsaturated fatty acid (MUFA) content, such as olive oil and avocado oil. Saffola had to adapt its product offerings to meet this demand.

There are many lesson you can learn from this case study first is to differentiate yourself which mean setting a unique value preposition from Saffola it really well by building new oil like MUFA oil, blended oil and rice bran oil etc. second is to invest in research and development by doing so they find the hidden gaps in the market and new way to create new markets.

Transparency in communication. Saffola is focused very much on designing and packaging you can apply this lesson in your own brand how you can take reference point from the existing player in the market. One of the key lesson you can learn is to build a large distribution network, they invested a lot of time and effort in building a robust distribution network.

The company is expanding into new markets, both domestically and internationally. For example, in 2022, Saffola launched its products in the United States.

The economic slowdown in India has led to a decline in demand for edible oils. This has had a negative impact on Saffola’ s sales.

The edible oil market is being increasingly competitive, because new brands are entered in the market in recent decades

This put pressure on Saffola to keep its prices competitive and to differentiate its products from its competitors.

Remember that creating a brand’s story is one thing but enacting it through all aspect of your business is another. Every interaction of your brand with the customer matters so put it in everything. As a human we are programmed to listen or tell stories. Every brand needs a story to tell the world that represents the essence of their branding. Brand story is the way you presents itself to the world and the way people perceives you. To resonate with your audience, your brand should play a role as adviser that will help them to improve their life.

KNOW WHAT YOU CREATE👨‍🎨

To build your brand story well enough you have to first understand what you create, how you does so. If you don’t build story around what you create, it doesn’t matter how much effort & time you put your brand will fail in catching people attention. You can ask few questions to align your story with what you create.

Does your product/ service really solve a problem

What is quality & benefits of your products/service

What are the competitive advantages you have

People think focus means saying yes to the thing you’ve got to focus on. But that’s not what it means at all. It means saying no to the hundred other good ideas”. – Steve Jobs

FIGURE OUT YOUR WHY(PURPOSE)↔️

While building a brand story focus on why you do what you do. Successful brands know their why (core purpose). If you are not, don’t worry you can figure out your why easily by asking these few questions like;

What is your purpose?

What is your values?

Why do you exist?

What is your vision?

You must start thinking from the beginning why you have entered in this field, why you are interested or passionate about this industry. When people see your passion and effort you are putting to solve people’s problem, they want to be a part of your story.

“Your purpose in life is to find your purpose and give your whole heart and soul to it.” - Buddha

UNDERSTAND TARGET AUDIENCE👨‍👨‍👦‍👦

It is really very important to understand people, for those you are here. As much as you know about them you can build a better brand story, you can curate message in such a way it will emotionally connect them. While researching about your audience you will get informed about their interests, needs and concerns etc. There is no such thing like narrowing down your audience it helps in building long lasting relation with your trusted customer and audience.

“We don’t do business with companies. We do business with people.” -Simon Sinek

MAKE IT CONCISE AND CLEAR🤏

Stories are powerful medium of sharing message/information from one place to another. We are living in a noisy world where everything is just a crap but only a few things are really valuable. As a humam being our attention span is very low that is why your brand story should be concise and clear. As less as information you put in a story as clear and concrete it will be. After completing your first draft take it to your potential customer and gather some feedback, it also help you in refining and coming back with something new and better.

BE AUTHENTIC AND CONSISTENT🔐

Both are essential elements of your brand story. If the story you want to share is not consistent it will lose in the way this is the main reason why you should communicate consistently in the same manner. Humans are hardwired to respond to stories because it causes our brains to release oxytocin chemical that increases empathy and trust. Authentic stories captivate audience and create meaningful emotional memories and remain in the brain long time.

SHARE PERSONAL EXPERIENCES(STORIES)👨‍🔬

Don’t underestimate the importance of your personal experiences and lessons that you have gather in the journey. When you use them effectively in your brand’s story it will be more personal and more human. As you have listen that emotional information remain in the brain for long time in comparison of factual or rational.
