Nawab Iftikhar Ali Khan of Jaora
As I have said in my earlier posts, my family migrated from Kashmir about 200 years ago and took up service under the Nawabs of Jaora ( in present Madhya Pradesh ), and served there for several generations. During British rule, Jaora was a princely state, a big Riyasat, next only to Gwalior, Indore and Bhopal, in the then Central Provinces in India.
There were several Nawabs of Jaora, but the one my family remembers is Nawab Iftikhar Ali Khan.
He was about 15-20 years younger to my great grandfather Pt. Tribhuwan Nath Katju, but the two were extremely fond of each other. Pt Tribhuwan Nath became the Dewan of Jaora, and Nawab saheb ( as we Katjus still call him today ), always consulted him in matters relating to the state, and even in some personal matters. In fact Pt Tribhuwan Nath negotiated for the Nawab saheb's marriage with the daughter of the Nawab of Rampur.
Pt Tribhuwan Nath retired in 1920 on the then retirement age of 55, and the Nawab saheb fixed his pension on his last salary drawn, Rs 300 p.m. which was then a huge amount. But even after retirement he would go the Nawab's palace at least once a week, and was always consulted by the Nawab on important matters.
Pt Tribhuwan Nath used to go for a few months every year to Allahabad to be with his son Dr KN Katju, who was a top lawyer in the High Court, but the last time he went there was in 1934 when he received a letter from the Nawab saying ''Panditji, aapke baghair mera man nahi lagta hai ''.
On receiving this letter he caught the first train to Jaora and met the Nawab, and said to him '' Nawab saheb, yeh baat aapne mujhse pehle kyon nahi kahi ? ", and thereafter he never left Jaora till his death in 1945.
On his death the Nawab made an announcement all over Jaora that he was the eldest son of Pt Tribhuwan Nath, so people should first come to him to pay condolence, and only thereafter go to Dr Katju ( who had come from Allahabad ) to pay condolence.
The Nawab saheb died shortly thereafter in 1947, and one wonders whether Pt Tribhuwan Nath's death contributed to his own death
