In sodium chloride (NaCl), an ionic bond forms when sodium (Na) loses one electron to become a Na⁺ ion, and chlorine (Cl) gains that electron to become a Cl⁻ ion.
Opposite charges (Na⁺ and Cl⁻) strongly attract each other due to electrostatic force, forming an ionic bond. As a result, NaCl forms a crystal lattice that is hard, has high melting point, and conducts electricity only in molten or aqueous state.
