There are moments in the life of an institution when you pause and realize just how far you have come.

Yesterday, I had the pleasure of meeting Dr Devarchana C. M., Gold Medallist of the first graduating batch of Manipal TATA Medical College, Jamshedpur, along with her proud parents. What began as a conversation about academic achievement soon became something much more meaningful—a reflection on courage, trust, and the journey of building something new together.

When MTMC welcomed its first batch in 2020, it was more than the opening of a medical college. It was the beginning of a vision—one that brought together the academic excellence of MAHE and the commitment of Tata Steel to create a new model of medical education in eastern India.

For students like Devarchana, choosing MTMC required belief. She arrived in Jamshedpur as a young student stepping into an unfamiliar city, away from the comfort of home, uncertain of what lay ahead. The institution itself was writing its first chapter, and so was she.

Five years later, sitting across from her as the Gold Medallist of the inaugural batch, I was struck by how beautifully those journeys had evolved together.

As MTMC celebrates its first-ever graduation ceremony in Jamshedpur as part of the 33rd Convocation of Manipal Academy of Higher Education, this milestone represents far more than the conferring of degrees. The success of MTMC's first graduating batch is not measured only in medals, ranks, or degrees. It is reflected in the confidence of its graduates, the trust of their families, the dedication of faculty who helped shape them, and the collective belief that a new institution could create something extraordinary.

The first batch will always hold a special place in MTMC's history. They arrived with faith in a vision. They leave having fulfilled that vision—and strengthened it for those who will follow.

Thirty-eight years ago, I walked into my first operating theatre with no guarantee of what the next hour would bring. You learn quickly that certainty is a luxury. What you cultivate instead is judgment — and the courage to act on it. I carry that with me now, as I step into the role of Vice Chancellor at Manipal Academy of Higher Education, over a week ago.

There is something humbling about leading an institution you once studied in. I sat in these classrooms. Grew here — Grew here — as a clinician, then as a teacher, and later as Dean of Kasturba Medical College, Manipal. This place is woven into me in ways no appointment letter could capture. I am not here to reinvent. I am here to listen, build on what is strong, and move with purpose toward what MAHE is still capable of becoming. But I do come with convictions. Here are three I will not set aside

𝐎𝐧𝐞: We are past the era of slow, comfortable growth. The disciplines that will define the next decade — at the intersection of health sciences, engineering, and the humanities — don't wait for institutions to catch up. We either lead, or we follow. At MAHE, I intend to lead.

𝐓𝐰𝐨: A university is only as alive as its students. Not their grades. Them. Their restlessness, their ambitions, the small crises that nobody talks about and the big ideas that never get a room. We will build spaces — physical and otherwise — where all of that has somewhere to go.

𝐓𝐡𝐫𝐞𝐞: Faculty are not staff. They are the intellectual spine of everything we do. My job is to get out of their way, and to make sure the conditions are right for them to do the work only they can do.

As a surgeon, I was taught that a steady hand and a clear eye are not opposites of speed — they are the conditions for it. That's the kind of leadership I want to bring here.

MAHE has earned its place. Now let's do something worthy of it. I'm glad to be here.

Theme: “Together for Health: Stand with Science”

The Department of Community Medicine, Manipal Tata Medical College, Jamshedpur, organized a series of academic and community-based activities to mark World Health Day 2026. These initiatives focused on raising awareness about key public health concerns and fostering community participation in preventive health practices.

Conducted under the aegis of the Indian Association of Preventive and Social Medicine (IAPSM), with support from the Association of Preventive and Social Medicine Jharkhand Chapter:

10 teams (30 students) participated enthusiastically
🏆 Team ASHA secured 1st place at the State-Level Quiz (2 April 2026)
💻 Advanced to the National-Level Elimination Round held online on 4 April 2026

🎨 Poster Making Competition (Community Outreach)
Poster-making competitions were conducted in government schools under RHTC and UTHC for students of Classes IX and X.
The students presented creative and insightful posters highlighting:

The role of science in improving health
The importance of the One Health approach

👏 These activities successfully combined academic excellence with community engagement, inspiring both medical students and school children to “Stand with Science” for a healthier future.

*🇮🇳 “From Training Grounds to Top Ranks — MTMC Shines Bright!” ✨* The ‘B’ Certificate Examination conducted by the National Cadet Corps under DG NCC Headquarters, Delhi, witnessed the participation of 377 cadets from nine colleges of the 37 Jharkhand Battalion, Jamshedpur. The examination evaluated cadets on discipline, training, and overall performance.

Manipal Tata Medical College delivered an outstanding performance by achieving a 100% pass rate and securing four positions in the city’s Top 10, reflecting the institution’s commitment to excellence and rigorous training standards.

Successfully organized the National Conference on “Diagnostic Approaches in Cardiovascular Diseases”

Hosted for the first time by the Cardiovascular Technology , Department of Allied Health Sciences, MTMC, in collaboration with Manipal Hospital, EM Bypass ,Kolkata, this hybrid conference united experts, researchers, and students from across the country and around the world.

It served as a dynamic platform for insightful discussions and meaningful knowledge exchange in cardiovascular diagnostics.

🚑 Basic Life Support (BLS) Training Conducted 🏥

📍 Skills Lab
A hands-on BLS training session was successfully conducted for Junior Residents, nursing staff, and ambulance drivers as part of a capacity-building initiative.

✔️ Real-time simulation practice.
