Temple, Ali Kadal, Srinagar
A standing legacy on the banks of the flowing Vitasta

Once surrounded by traditional Kashmiri Pandit homes, on the right bank of the Vitasta River near Ali Kadal in Srinagar, stands an ancient shrine known as Batyar Temple. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, the temple houses a unique Shiv Lingam.

The site holds deep spiritual importance due to Pandit Padshah, (PIR PANDlT PADSHAH HARDU JAHAN MUSHKIL ASAN), a revered saint of the 17th century, often remembered as “Padshah of two worlds and the one who resolves all difficulties.” It is believed that his last rites were performed at this very place, and later the Shiv Lingam was installed there. Much more about his life is documented and deserves a detailed account.

Present Condition:

The temple has a large Shiv Lingam with a beautifully carved inverted lotus at its base. An ancient sculpture of Nandi is also present. The walls display old photographs and paintings, preserving memories of the past. Several sacred Shaligrams are also kept inside the temple.

The base of the temple is built with stone, raised above the river level, while the upper structure is made of wood, reflecting traditional Kashmiri architecture.

This heritage site is still being cared for by a devoted Kashmiri Pandit, Ramesh Kumar Ji, who lives there alone. In his mid-60s, he continues to uphold the traditions and cultural legacy with deep faith in Lord Shiva. He has also been teaching local children in the area.

{Now, due to his age, he is in need of some domestic help to assist in maintaining the temple. Basic facilities like lodging, food, clothing, education, and a reasonable salary can be arranged for anyone willing to help.}

Conclusion:

Visitors to famous shrines in Kashmir should take time to visit such lesser-known temples as well. These places need attention and support to keep their legacy alive. People like Ramesh Kumar Ji, who chose to stay back and dedicate their lives to preserving our heritage, truly deserve recognition and support.

Everyone is requested to share their memories, experiences, stories, old photographs, manuscripts, and books; anything that can help preserve what remains of our rich heritage for future generations.

A walnut tree belonging to a displaced Kashmiri Pandit family in Pombi, Kulgam, was allegedly damaged by unknown persons. The family, now living as migrants in Jammu, says the tree stands on their ancestral property and represents one of the few remaining links to their homeland. They have sought action from the authorities and demanded protection of their property.

Prankote Massacre(Reasi,Jammu) : On this day on 17th April in 1998, 29 Dogra Hindus were brutally hacked to death or burnt alive in their homes in Jammu region. Their village Prankote-Dakikote was a remote mountain village and amongst those killed were women and 12 children. 14 Islamist terrorists with links to Pakistan based terror orgs HM & LeT used not a single bullet but cleavers and axes to kill these innocent villagers.

It took 4 days for survivors to be able to come down the mountains and inform the administration. 4 days before a mass cremation according to Hindu rites could take place for the victims.

A 1000 families were forced to leave their villages and into ‘migrant camps’. They are commonly referred to as ‘Talwara migrants’. They have been living in 10X10 rooms which need considerable work. Amongst other things these “migrants” have been demanding to be treated at par with Kashmiri “migrants” which includes quotas for jobs for their educated youth.

Though things have slowly moved in a positive direction after 2014, lot more needs to be done. The Talwara “migrants” have also requested the Govt to help them reclaim their ancestral land in the mountain villages they were forced to leave. Their land today is illegally occupied/encroached.

It is important to remember these brutal massacres of Hindus in Jammu Kashmir, Prankote being just one of the many Jammu region has seen. May this never happen again. May we speak up for the Talwara ‘migrants’. May they go back home to the land of their forefathers and Devtas, one day soon.

The Amravati Se× scandal is deeply disturbing. The main accused, 19-year-old Mohammad Ayan, allegedly victimized 300 minors. Parents: stay close to your daughters.
Build enough trust that they come to you instead of hiding things, and teach them to stay aware of their surroundings.
