The Entomological Science Academy (ESA), SKUAST-Jammu, has emerged as a leading scientific platform promoting research, education and outreach in insect science and sustainable agriculture. Over the past year, the Academy organized a diverse set of academic and extension activities that strengthened entomological research and ecological awareness across the region.
A major highlight of the year was the successful conduct of two national-level scientific events. The National Conference on Ecological Engineering and Pest Management 2024 brought together experts from ICAR institutes, agricultural universities, and ecological research organizations. The conference focused on eco-friendly pest regulation, habitat manipulation, biocontrol technologies, climate-resilient IPM, pollinator conservation, and ecological design for sustainable farming. Keynote speakers emphasized ecological intensification, insect biodiversity, landscape ecology, and digital surveillance tools. Young researchers presented papers and posters, with outstanding contributions recognized through ESA’s research awards. The conference proceedings and the book “Ecological Engineering for Sustainable Pest Management” were released during the event.
ESA also contributed to the National Congress on Entomology, where scientists deliberated on insect invasions, climate change impacts, biocontrol innovations, and emerging challenges in agri-ecosystems. ESA members chaired sessions, presented research findings, and facilitated expert interactions, strengthening national collaborations in applied and fundamental entomology.
Throughout the year, ESA celebrated major Insect Days, including World Bee Day, World Mosquito Day, National Insect Day, and Pollinator Week. These events featured exhibitions, school outreach, awareness campaigns, and live insect displays. The initiatives received positive media coverage in Daily Excelsior, State Times, and local digital platforms, highlighting ESA’s contribution to community education and biodiversity conservation.
The Academy published important scientific works, including “Insect Biodiversity of Jammu Himalaya”, “Advances in Integrated Pest Management”, and the ESA Annual Compendium summarizing research and student innovations. New initiatives such as the Digital Insect Database,Butterfly Park Pollinator Garden Programme, EntoTalks Lecture Series, and Research Incubation Cell for Young Scientists further expanded ESA’s academic and extension footprint.
ESA continued its tradition of recognizing excellence by conferring Young Entomologist Awards, Innovative Research Awards, Women in Entomology Awards, Extension Excellence Awards, and the Lifetime Achievement Honour. These recognitions encouraged students, researchers, and faculty to pursue impactful scientific work.
Overall, the Entomological Science Academy at SKUAST-Jammu has demonstrated exceptional leadership in promoting entomological research, ecological engineering, sustainable pest management, and community outreach, marking a year of significant scientific, educational, and societal impact. Currently the ESA has 12 honorary Fellows, 30 Fellows, 121 Life Members and about 263 amateur entomologists are associated with the Academy. Come, join us for the promotion of Entomology
