*Answer writing for Mains 2023 ( Strategy by IAS Faizan Ahmed)*

My experience -
Wrote whatever test series and Mains PYQ only after the prelims exam. I wrote 5-6 essays, 10 sectional GS tests, 14 full length GS tests and around 20 tests of optional. Apart from this, I wrote almost 50 pyq from different topics from UPSC papers 2013 till 2019. All these I wrote between October 2020 to Jan 2020.

Even before prelims, I had written hundreds of answers. I remember I started writing answers just after my 1st failed prelims attempt, daily 4 answers, 2 for GS (Insights daily answer writing) and 2 for optional (from PYQ). I had written around 10 essays before prelims. I started from August 2019. This worked as a base for attempting test series. My phobia was gone and my speed improved. I started enjoying answer writing.

By the time I wrote my first test after prelims, I could attempt 16 questions out of 20. Slowly, my number of answers attempted as well as marks also improved drastically. All it took was lot of practice.

Getting good marks in mains depend on the following factors -
1. Good handwriting speed
2. Ability to quickly comprehend question
3. Ability to quickly recall facts and information
4. Readymade structure for answer, readymade intro and conclusion designs.
5. Use of maps, diagrams, flow charts to fill the page quickly with lesser information.
6. Write average answers for all rather than excellent answer for few questions.
7. Time management

All the above will come only with practice and practice. Write as many answers/tests as you can in these 3 months. Don't panic if you get low marks or you don't finish paper on time, gradually things will fall into place.
