ENGLISH GRAMMAR TRICK YOU SHOULD KNOW!
❓ *Why do we say “AREN’T I?” when the sentence has “I AM”?*
This confuses many English learners! 🤔
Usually, a question tag uses the same helping verb as the statement:
👉 She is happy, *isn’t she?*
👉 They are ready, *aren’t they?*
So, shouldn’t we say:
❌ I am late, amn’t I?
No! 😄
In standard English, *“amn’t I?” is not normally used.*
Instead, we use the special form:
✅ *I am late, aren’t I?*
✨ *Remember this special rule:*
*I am → aren’t I?*
Examples:
✔️ I am right, *aren’t I?*
✔️ I am your teacher, *aren’t I?*
✔️ I am invited, *aren’t I?*
But when the statement is negative:
👉 I am not late, *am I?*
👉 I am not disturbing you, *am I?*
📌 *Easy formula:*
*I am + positive → AREN’T I?*
*I am not + negative → AM I?*
English has some fascinating little exceptions! 😍
