Tales of Bhola Grandpa

Manoj Das (27 February 1934 - 27 April 2021) is an Indian writer, who won awards for writing books. He writes both in Oriya and English. Among his writings are many novels, short stories, poems, articles basically on history and culture and travelogues.
মনোজ দাস (27 ফেব্রুয়ারি 1934 - 27 এপ্রিল 2021) একজন ভারতীয় লেখক, যিনি বই লেখার জন্য পুরস্কার জিতেছেন। তিনি ওড়িয়া এবং ইংরেজি উভয় ভাষায় লেখেন। তার লেখার মধ্যে রয়েছে অনেক উপন্যাস, ছোটগল্প, কবিতা, প্রবন্ধ, মূলত ইতিহাস ও সংস্কৃতি এবং ভ্রমণকাহিনী।
मनोज दास (27 फरवरी 1934 - 27 अप्रैल 2021) एक भारतीय लेखक हैं, जिन्होंने किताबें लिखने के लिए पुरस्कार जीते। वह उड़िया और अंग्रेजी दोनों में लिखते हैं। उनके लेखन में कई उपन्यास, लघु कथाएँ, कविताएँ, लेख मूल रूप से इतिहास और संस्कृति और यात्रा वृतांत हैं।

Bhola Grandpa and his wife lived at the western end of our village.
আমাদের গ্রামের পশ্চিম প্রান্তে থাকতেন ভোলা দাদা ও তার স্ত্রী।
A large bokal tree overshadowed their hut.
একটি বড় বকুল গাছ তাদের কুঁড়েঘরকে ছায়াবৃত করে রেখেছিলো।
In the bokal tree lived a small troop of monkeys.
বকুল গাছে বাস করত একটি বানরের দল।
Bhola Grandpa and his wife did not mind it.
ভোলা দাদা ও তার স্ত্রী তাতে কিছু মনে করতেন না।
One moonlit night, we were returning from a festival.
এক চন্দ্রালোকিত রাত্রে আমরা উৎসব থেকে ফিরছিলাম।
The road was long and foggy.
রাস্তাটি ছিল দীর্ঘ এবং কুয়াশাচ্ছন্ন।
I was riding on the village chowkidar's shoulders.
আমি গ্রামের চৌকিদারের কাঁধে চড়ে ছিলাম।
Suddenly, Bhola Grandpa let out a loud wail.
হঠাৎ ভোলা দাদা একটা জোরে আর্তনাদ করে উঠলেন।
Everyone in our party was surprised.
আমাদের দলের সকলে অবাক হয়ে গেলো।
We halted.
আমরা থামলাম।
Enquiry revealed that Bhola Grandpa had taken his grandson to the festival.
অনুসন্ধান করে জানা গেলো যে , ভোলা দাদা তার নাতিটি কে নিয়ে গিয়েছিলেন উৎসবে।
He had tightly held on to the two fingers of the boy.
তিনি ছেলেটির দুটি আঙুল শক্ত করে চেপে ধরেছিলেন।
He did not realize when those fingers slipped out.
কখন যে আঙুলগুলো বেরিয়ে গেছিলো তিনি বুঝতেই পারেনি।
Bhola Grandpa was continuing as before.
ভোলা দাদা আগের মতই চলছিলেন।
Then someone asked Bhola Grandpa what he was gripping.
তখন কেউ একজন ভোলা দাদাকে জিজ্ঞেস করলো তিনি কি ধরে আছেন।
He remembered his grandson and let out a loud wail.
তার নাতির কথা মনে পড়লো এবং তিনি উচ্চস্বরে আর্তনাদ করে উঠলেন।
My father chose two sharp-eyed men from our party to go back with Bhola Grandpa to the festival.
আমার বাবা ভোলা দাদার সাথে উৎসবে ফিরে যাওয়ার জন্য আমাদের দলের থেকে দুজন তীক্ষ্ণ দৃষ্টি সম্পন্ন লোককে বেছে নিলেন।
The grandson was found before long.
বেশি দেরি হওয়ার আগেই নাতিকে পাওয়া গেল।
He had taken a cosy shelter under a cow's belly.
সে একটি গরুর পেটের নিচে একটি আরামদায়ক আশ্রয় গ্রহণ করেছিল।
I remember another funny incident about Bhola Grandpa related by my father.
আমার বাবার সঙ্গে সম্পর্ক যুক্ত ভোলা দাদার আরেকটি মজার ঘটনা আমার মনে পড়ে।
It had been a rainy afternoon.
এটা ছিল একটি বৃষ্টি বহুল বিকেলবেলা।
Bhola Grandpa, wild with excitement, told my father and his friends that he had seen a gang of pirates.
ভোলা দাদা, উত্তেজিত হয়ে, আমার বাবা এবং তার বন্ধুদের বলেছিলেন যে তিনি জলদস্যুদের একটা দল কে দেখেছিলেন।
They were burying a large box under one of the sand dunes on the seashore by our village.
তারা আমাদের গ্রামের পাশে সমুদ্রের ধারে একটি বালির টিলার নীচে একটি বড় বাক্স পুঁতে রাখছিলো।
At once father and his friends started looking for the hidden treasure.
তক্ষুনি বাবা ও তার বন্ধুরা গুপ্তধন খুঁজতে লাগলেন।
Evening passed on to night.
সন্ধে পেড়িয়ে রাত হয়ে এল।
Moonlight came in through the clouds.
মেঘের ভিতর দিয়ে চাঁদের আলো এসে পড়ল।
A pack of jackals was howling.
এক দল শিয়াল চিৎকার করছিল।
It was past midnight.
মধ্যরাত পেরিয়ে গেলো।
At this point of time, Bhola Grandpa confessed that there was no real treasure.
এই সময়ে, ভোলা দাদা স্বীকার করলেন যে সেখানে প্রকৃত কোনো সম্পদ নেই।
It was all a dream which he had during his midday nap.
এটা ছিল সম্পূর্ণটাই একটি স্বপ্ন যেটা সে দুপুরে ঘুমের সময় দেখেছিলো।
Once Bhola Grandpa had a great adventure in the Sunderbans.
একবার ভোলা দাদা সুন্দরবনে দারুণ এক অ্যাডভেঞ্চার করেছিলেন।
In those days Royal Bengal tigers freely roamed the dense jungles of the Sunderbans.
তখনকার দিনে রয়েল বেঙ্গল টাইগার গুলো সুন্দরবনের ঘন জঙ্গলে অবাধে বিচরণ করত।
People took care to move about only in groups, particularly after sundown.
লোকেরা, বিশেষত সূর্যাস্তের পরে, সতর্কতার সাথে দলবদ্ধভাবে চলাফেরা করতো।
One evening, Bhola Grandpa was returning from the weekly market.
একদিন সন্ধ্যায় ভোলা দাদা সাপ্তাহিক বাজার অর্থাৎ হাট থেকে ফিরছিলেন।
Suddenly at a distance of about five yards behind him, he heard the growl of a Royal Bengal tiger.
হঠাৎ তার পেছনে প্রায় পাঁচ গজ দূরে, তিনি রয়েল বেঙ্গল টাইগারের গর্জন শুনতে পেলেন।
Bhola Grandpa turned and found the bright gaze of the tiger on his face.
ভোলা দাদা ঘুরে দাঁড়ালেন এবং বাঘের মুখে তার উজ্জ্বল দৃষ্টি দেখতে পেলেন।
Bhola Grandpa instantly climbed up a nearby banyan tree.
ভোলা দাদা তৎক্ষণাৎ কাছের একটা বটগাছে উঠে গেলেন।
The tiger roared and circled the tree about a hundred times.
বাঘটি গর্জন করতে করতে গাছটিকে প্রায় একশো বার প্রদক্ষিণ করতে লাগলো।
Then it settled down under a bush without taking its eyes off him.
তারপর তার (ভোলা দাদার) থেকে চোখ না সরিয়ে বাঘটি একটি ঝোপের নিচে বসে পড়লো।
With nightfall, the forest grew dark and silent.
রাত নামার সাথে সাথে জঙ্গল অন্ধকার এবং নীরব হয়ে এল।
Bhola Grandpa could hear the tiger beating its tail on the dry leaves.
ভোলা দাদা শুকনো পাতায় বাঘের লেজের ঝাঁপট মারতে শুনতে পেলেন।
Hour passed.
ঘন্টার পর ঘন্টা পেরিয়ে গেল।
Dawn broke with the cooing of doves.
ঘুঘুর ডাকে ভোর হয়ে এলো।
Bhola Grandpa came down.
ভোলা দাদা নেমে এলেন।
There was a group of men on a mound a little away.
একটু দূরে একটা স্তুপের উপর একদল লোক ছিল।
Bhola Grandpa climbed the mound and request the first man he saw for some water to drink.
ভোলা দাদা স্তুপের উপরে উঠে প্রথমে যাকে দেখেছিলেন তাকে পানীয় জলের জন্য অনুরোধ করলেন।
The man had seen the tiger waiting.
লোকটি বাঘকে অপেক্ষা করতে দেখেছিলেন।
He was much bewildered.
তিনি ভীষণ হতভম্ব হয়ে গেলেন।
"What is your secret that you simply walked past the hungry beast and it did nothing?" he asked Bhola Grandpa.
"আপনার রহস্যটা কী যে আপনি সহজেই ক্ষুধার্ত জন্তুটির পাশ দিয়ে চলে এলেন এবং এটি কিছুই করলো না?" তিনি ভোলা দাদাকে জিজ্ঞেস করলেন।
The tiger was stretching its limbs and yawning.
বাঘ তার অঙ্গ প্রত্যঙ্গ প্রসারিত করছিল এবং হাই তুলছিলো।
Then, Bhola Grandpa remembered the tiger and looked at it.
তখন, ভোলা দাদার বাঘের কথা মনে পড়ল এবং তার দিকে তাকালেন।
Bhola Grandpa almost lost his senses in fear.
ভোলা দাদা ভয়ে প্রায় জ্ঞান হারিয়ে ফেললেন।
He ran back home.
তিনি দৌড়ে বাড়ি ফিরে গেলেন।
Half a century later, Bhola Grandpa left us forever one morning at the age of ninety-five.
অর্ধশতাব্দী পরে, ভোলা দাদা একদিন সকালে পঁচানব্বই বছর বয়সে আমাদের ছেড়ে চলে গেলেন।
His eighty-year-old wife lamented much.
তার আশি বছর বয়সী স্ত্রী অনেক কান্নাকাটি করলেন।
She said with a sigh, " The old man must have forgotten to breathe."
একটা দীর্ঘশ্বাস ফেলে তিনি বললেন, "বুড়ো নিশ্চয়ই শ্বাস নিতে ভুলে গেছে।"

"तुम्हारा क्या रहस्य है कि तुम भूखे जानवर के पास से चले और उसने कुछ नहीं किया?" उसने भोला दादाजी से पूछा।

आधी सदी बाद, एक सुबह नब्बे वर्ष की उम्र में भोला दादाजी हमेशा के लिए हमें छोड़कर चले गए।
