In 1582 Pope Gregory XIII fixed the Julian calendar's 10-day drift from the solar year. To realign the spring equinox (key for Easter), Catholic lands skipped October 5–14. Thursday the 4th was followed immediately by Friday the 15th. That switch launched the Gregorian calendar still used today.
