NEF wishes you all a safe, healthy and cheerful Holi!!

Holi is the time which ushers the welcoming of the spring season and ends the winter blues. Historically, it holds a lot of importance. From folklores to songs, you can find a lot of mentions of this festival. Many believe that the festival marks the celebration of good over evil.

The festival of colours falls a day after the full moon. While a pious Holika bonfire is lit a day before the actual celebration, people come together to celebrate the victory of good over evil and splash colours of happiness around each other. No matter how you wish to celebrate, the feelings are all the same. Some splash around water pichkaaris, some use balloons, some use natural gulaal and flowers.

Holi usually marks the welcoming of spring, fertility, harvest and bright colours in the world after the dullness of winter. Culturally, people also say that Holi is the day when people bid goodbye to their problems, animosities and some even say that the biggest enemies and foes turn into friends on this blessed day by applying gulaal on each other's faces.

The festival is also celebrated in a grand manner in the region of Mathura and Vrindavan, to honour, cherish and remember the holy love and union of Radha and Krishna.

Play safe, eat healthy & stay cheerful!!

“One is not born but rather becomes a woman”

International Women’s Day has an interesting history which should be duly noted by everyone, especially women. In 1908, the Socialist Party of America organized a day to protest against the contemporary women’s working conditions. The first all-women’s strike was held in New Hampshire 80 years before this, and the event was one of the milestones that were laid for women’s development and well-being. This strike that was held in 1908 was seen as a corollary of the first one and its importance, therefore, was of the highest order when one comes to study the history of Women’s Rights. The first National Woman’s Day was made official in the United States on February 28, 1909. Later, it was shifted to March 8th and was renamed to International Women’s Day. In the 1980s, International Women’s Day was expanded to include an entire week of activities. This was done in the week preceding 8 March and included the first week of March. The International Women’s Day is a part of this week and the week is celebrated with great enthusiasm and multiple events which are celebrated to mark Women’s Rights, their emancipation and their struggle for equality.

26th January commemorates the historic sacrifices that led India to be a sovereign, independent nation. This year, India will be marking its 73rd Republic Day.

It was also on this day in 1965 when Hindi was declared as the official language of India.

The Republic Day signifies the right spirit of Independent and individual India. It was on this day in 1930 when the Indian National Congress revealed Purna Swaraj, the declaration of India’s independence from colonial rule. It was under the leadership of Dr. BR Ambedkar when the new constitution was enrolled.

This day radiates the fervour and spirit of independence and how freedom fighters and patriots had given their all for India. This day is also a representation of India’s diversity and secularism.

In New Delhi, the national flag is hoisted by the President of India at India Gate. The amazing parades take place at Rajpath, New Delhi. The parade is conducted by the Indian President and is arranged by the Ministry of Defence. Other than displaying its military prowess, the event also promotes India’s diverse culture. The event also honors the martyrs who have sacrificed their lives for the country.

The Prime Minister of India honours the martyrs by putting a ringlet at the Amar Jawan Jyoti at India Gate. It’s followed by a 21-gun salute, national flag hoisting, and national anthem. Awards are presented to the brave soldiers in the form of Paramvir Chakra, Ashok Chakra, and Vir Chakra. Even children and adult citizens who have displayed courage in times of adversity are honoured with awards.

After all the celebrations, the Beating Retreat takes place which officially denotes the end of Republic Day festivities. All important Government Buildings are beautifully adorned with yellow lights every evening from 26th to 29th.

"Give me blood and I shall give you freedom" - A slogan that filled the heart of every indian with vigor and zeal to fight for independence.

Let's remember our legend, leader and great patriot Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose on the auspicious occasion of his 125th birth anniversary today.

One of the iconic leaders of all times, Subhas Chandra Bose, lovingly known as Netaji, was not just instrumental in India freedom struggle from the British but his patriotism and ideologies went on to inspire generations after him. Born on January 23, 1897, Bose’s iconic call for freedom earned him an unwearied reputation not just in India but with other world leaders as well.

Netaji led a young radical wing of the Indian National Congress in the late 1920s, becoming its president. He was later ousted due to ideological differences with Mahatma Gandhi but he continued his struggle for freedom by building the Indian National Army and the All India Forward Bloc, which was a left-wing nationalist political party in India. Indian women also played an important role in the activities for the freedom of India. A women’s regiment of Azad Hind Fauj was formed, called Rani of Jhansi regiment, which was under the command of Captain Lakshmi Swaminathan.

Here are some quotes and messages from Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose:

“It is our duty to pay for our liberty with our own blood.”

”Life loses half its interest if there is no struggle — if there are no risks to be taken.”

“It is blood alone that can pay the price of freedom. Give me blood and I will give you freedom”

“One individual may die for an idea, but that idea will, after his death, incarnate itself in a thousand lives.”

“Freedom is not given, It. Is taken”

“Reality is, after all, too big for our frail understanding to fully comprehend. Nevertheless, we have to build our life on the theory which contains the maximum truth”

“Never lose your faith in the destiny of India. There is no power on Earth that can keep India in bo***ge. India will be free, that too, soon.”

Lohri is a much celebrated folk festival that marks the passing of the winter solstice and celebrates the arrival of longer days. Observed the night before Makar Sankranti, Lohri falls in the month of Paush/Magh and marks the beginning of the harvest season. It is usually the first major festival of the Hindus in a year.

On this auspicious day, people across the country celebrate Lohri with full fervour and enthusiasm. As tradition goes, men and women gather around a huge fire, throwing in revdi and puffed rice. People wear traditional clothes and distribute popcorn, revdi, gajak, jaggery and puffed rice among themselves and have a fun and exciting evening.

However, amid the rising number of COVID-19 cases, it is better to take all coronavirus safety measures.
