The Department of Physics, Manipal University Jaipur is going to launch the lecture series *“SPECTRUM, where novel ideas converge”*.
*“Spectrum”* is an international lecture series on science by eminent scientists holding prestigious national and international awards.
The inaugural lecture under the series will be held on 11 September 2023 from 11.30 am – 12.30 pm.
The speaker is *PROFESSOR DEEPAK DHAR*, *DISTINGUISHED PROFESSOR EMERITUS AND NASI-SENIOR SCIENTIST, IISER, PUNE*. He received BOLTZMANN MEDAL, THE HIGHEST RECOGNITION IN STATISTICAL PHYSICS (2022); SHANTI SWARUP BHATNAGAR PRIZE (1991); PADMA BHUSHAN (2023) for his path breaking research works.

200 YEARS OF STUDIES OF PHASE TRANSITIONS.
*Abstract (in speaker’s words):*
The scientific study of phase transitions may be said to have begun with the demonstration of continuity of the liquid and gaseous states at high temperatures by cagniard de la tour in 1822. In this talk, i will present a personal perspective about its status after 200 years. Our understanding of continuous phase transitions is pretty good by now. The scaling theories of widom, fisher and kadanoff have led to the understanding of critical phenomena in the framework of the renormalization group theory. But we still do not have simple tractable models that show the solid to liquid to gas phase transitions. I will mention some of my recent work on phase transitions in systems with only hard-core interactions.
