Tomorrow's a special day at Alliance Française Jaipur.

We will be screening the documentary feature Writing with Fire, directed by Rintu Thomas and Sushmit Ghosh.

But that's not all, we will also be hosting 15 members of the NGO Mahila Jan Adhikar Samiti, young women who are learning to become fearless digital journalists and filmmakers and another 25 young and promising youth from the NGO Indian Women Impact who wish to become sociologists, filmmakers and policy makers.

The evening will begin with a session with senior journalist and author Dr. Tabeenah Anjum, who will speak on grassroots activism, social justice and political commentary. It would also be an occasion for us to learn more about her new book, From Dynasties to Democracy: Politics, Power and Class Struggle in Rajasthan that she co-authored with journalist Deep Deep Mukherjee.

A little bit about the film we will watch right after:

Writing with Fire (documentary, 90 mins, Hindi) is an exploration of truth, justice and the meaning of power, through the lens of an all-women's
newsroom- Khabar Lahariya.

Armed with smartphones, wit and tenacity, these journalists break traditions, be it on the frontlines of India's biggest issues or within the confines of their homes, redefining what it means to be powerful.

With over 40 award wins, including double wins at Sundance and a Peabody for Best Documentary,
Writing With Fire has played in over 200 film festivals globally and went on to become India's first feature documentary to be nominated for an Oscar. This film is made possible with the support of JCA's Summer film programing Artist's Cinema | Artists' Cinema curated by Shwetal A. Patel.

Rintu Thomas and Sushmit Ghosh are Academy Award-nominated and Peabody Award-winning
Indian filmmakers. Rintu will be in conversation with the audience post screening. She will be joining us online.

We moved our Student Spotlight to a Tuesday this week, because it's 14 July, Bastille Day, ( also the French National Day) and it seemed like a great fit.

This week, meet Ishan Awasthi (by his own admission, a truly filmy name 😆).

Ishan is a student of our French for All programme in Jaipur, part of Podar Government College. He is currently enrolled in his A1.2 and here's what he has to say.

"French is one of the most spoken languages in the world, and learning how to communicate in it will help me connect with so many people.

When I started learning French, I thought to myself that one day I'll be reading a French book, listening to French music and watching French films, without any subtitles or translation. That would be a good day. And what better place to learn French than at the Alliance Française. The official centre for French language teachers highly are qualified, trained and experienced. Best place in the city right now! "

French for All is a flagship programme of the French Institute in India in collaboration with Alliance Française Jaipur in this case. The objective is to bring French language training to government schools and colleges of India - in Rajasthan we are working with 2 pilot colleges - one each in Jaipur and Udaipur and additionally, training 32 government college teachers to become teachers of French.

Meet Suman Aunty. She is our brand new canteen in charge at Alliance Française Jaipur. With a cracking new monsoon menu ( yes yes we know the monsoons are yet to come to our city, but so what). We promise you that when you sample the snacks she makes, you'll feel the burst of many seasons in your tastebuds.

Victoria is a masterpiece in restrained storytelling, every frame feels long drawn and intentional. Meenakshi Jayann who plays Victoria lets the film unravel the ups and downs of her expression. Women seen by women, women written by women as Surbhi Jain said.

The audience were mostly students from Alliance Française Jaipur and Indian Women Impact NGO. Brilliant, curious, young minds who asked such insightful and deep questions that it moved the director to tears during the interactive Q/A.

Another Monday, another student spotlight.

Meet Kanchi, from IICD who is in enrolled in our A1 French programme as part of AFJ's collaboration with IICD.

Here's what Kanchi has to say about why she's learning French.

"I’m learning French because every language changes the way we see the world a little. And French makes even simple conversations feel more interesting."

Starting today, every Monday, we will publish a story on one of our students. Let's call this section The Student Spotlight.

Meet Kiran, a bright young woman from Jaipur who defied one too many odds to chart her own path.

She is currently enrolled in our French for Social Change programme at the A2 level, and alongside her English classes, which she teaches at a local school, she has also begun taking some informal French lessons for grades 1 and 2 at this school. She told us just today :)

Her dream is to be able to teach all her life!

We asked her why she is learning French and here is what she said.

"I want to learn French because I am interested in learning a new language and exploring a different culture.

I also want to become a French teacher in the future. Learning French will help me meet new people, communicate confidently with strangers, and travel around the world more easily. I believe French is a useful and valuable language with great scope in the future, both for career opportunities and personal growth.

I am learning French at the Alliance Française because it is a well-known and official French language institute, and it is also conveniently located near my home. I believe it is the best place to improve my French language skills in a professional and supportive environment. I am very grateful to Alliance Française for giving me the opportunity to learn French and helping me."

Kiran is part of the Indian Women Impact NGO and we are truly thankful to this marvellous institution for making us a part of their change making journey.

Bravo! To the 29 teachers from the Government Colleges of Rajasthan, who appeared for their DELF A1 exams at Alliance Française Jaipur on June 15.

On their way to become trained professionals of French language, these teachers are receiving intensive training as part of the French for All program for Rajasthan, launched by the French Institute in India in collaboration with the Commissionerate of Education, Govt of Rajasthan and Alliance Française Jaipur.

They will continue their A2 and B1 journeys with the final DELF of B1 scheduled in December.
