Makar Sankranti is a Hindu festival which is celebrated on 14th January every year. Makar (Capricorn) is a Hindu zodiac sign and Sankranti means to change direction. Makar Sankranti is also known as the festival of kites
and is celebrated to mark the end of the winter season and commemorate the upcoming harvest season. Largely celebrated in North India, Makar Sankranti is observed to pay homage and thank the Sun God, Surya for blessing the harvest with useful and effective resources.

On this day 73 years ago, the Constitution of India was adopted, coming into effect on January 26, 1950. Since 2015, the day has been observed as Constitution Day, or 'Samvidhan Diwas'. The Constituent Assembly took two years, 11 months and 17 days to draft the Constitution for Independent India.

Dhanteras Puja takes place in the evening. Fresh flowers and prasad are offered to the Goddess. Small imprints of footsteps are drawn from outside the home to inside to denote Goddess Lakshmi's arrival into the house. People also clean their homes prior to the puja and decorate it with lanterns and rangoli.
