Project 108: Royal University of Bhutan’s Offering

The family of the Royal University of Bhutan has come forward in support of Project 108, joining His Majesty The King’s vision to establish 108 Jangchub Chortens in Gelephu Mindfulness City.

As an institution dedicated to learning and the education of Bhutan’s young people, the offering carries a natural connection to the aspiration for wisdom and understanding that lies at the heart of the Jangchub Chorten.

It is a reminder that the legacy of Project 108 will not only be built in stone, but also carried forward through the people and generations who will shape Bhutan’s future.

Building Climate-Resilient Urban Communities through Nature-Based Solutions

The College of Science and Technology (CST), Royal University of Bhutan, has commenced a three-day training on Nature-Based Solutions (NbS) from 18–20 August 2026, in collaboration with the Enhancing Climate Resilience of Urban Landscapes and Communities (ECRUL) Project.

The programme brings together engineers, architects, and Heads and management officials from agencies including NHDCL, Regional Office for Infrastructure Development, Jigme Wangchuck Power Training Institute, TTI, Thimphu Thromde, and other relevant sectors. The training is delivered by CST resource persons and covers green walls, green roofs, bioswales, rain gardens/bioretention, wetlands, and NbS design, along with practical design activities, experience sharing, and a review of the NbS Manual.

The training will strengthen participants’ capacity to integrate sustainable and climate-resilient solutions into their respective fields, particularly in urban planning, infrastructure development, project design, and management. It will support better approaches to flood management, water conservation, urban greenery, biodiversity, and climate resilience.

Funded through the ECRUL Project, the initiative contributes to strengthening professional capacity and promoting sustainable and climate-resilient urban development in Bhutan.

Strengthening Construction Quality Management Capacity

The College of Science and Technology (CST) has commenced the 11th batch of the Competency-Based Training on Construction Quality Management for MoIT Officials, starting 17 August 2026 at CST.

The six-day training brings together engineers from the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport (MoIT)and focuses on strengthening their knowledge and practical skills in quality assurance, inspection and testing, construction processes, workmanship standards, and quality management.

The training will help participants apply improved quality control and assurance practices in their day-to-day work, enabling them to effectively monitor construction activities, identify and address quality issues, ensure compliance with standards and specifications, and improve the overall quality, safety, and durability of infrastructure projects.

The training is being delivered by CST resource persons from the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and the Department of Science and Humanities, with the programme coordinated and funded through the Royal Civil Service Commission (RCSC).

The 12th and final batch is scheduled to commence next week, continuing this important capacity-building initiative for engineers and contributing to the strengthening of Bhutan’s construction sector.

CST Strengthens Solar Sector Partnerships with Two MoUs

The College of Science and Technology (CST), through the Solar Technology Application Resource Centre (STAR-C), today signed two Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with the Bhutan Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCCI) and JB Solar Solutions, respectively, at the STAR-C Training Hall, CST, Rinchending.

The MoUs mark an important milestone in strengthening collaboration between academia, government, international partners, and the private sector to advance Bhutan’s solar energy sector. The partnerships will support areas including solar technology development, entrepreneurship, incubation, capacity building, innovation, and industry–academia collaboration.

The collaboration with BCCI will help strengthen linkages with Bhutan’s private sector and create opportunities for promoting solar-based enterprises and innovation, while the partnership with JB Solar Solutions will contribute industry expertise and practical engagement in advancing solar technology and entrepreneurship.

The STAR-C initiative is being implemented by CST under the Royal University of Bhutan (RUB), in collaboration with the Department of Energy, Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources, and the International Solar Alliance (ISA). These partnerships reflect a collective commitment to strengthening Bhutan’s solar ecosystem through capacity development, technology application, knowledge exchange, entrepreneurship, and industry engagement.

The signing ceremony brought together representatives from CST, STAR-C, BCCI, JB Solar Solutions, and key partner organisations, reflecting a shared commitment to supporting Bhutan’s transition towards a sustainable, innovative, and resilient energy future.
CST looks forward to meaningful collaboration with BCCI and JB Solar Solutions, alongside its national and international partners, in building a stronger solar ecosystem and fostering new opportunities for innovation, entrepreneurship, and sustainable energy development in Bhutan.

Strengthening Bhutan’s Solar Engineering Capacity!

The College of Science and Technology (CST), through STAR-C Bhutan, has commenced a three-day PVsyst Training Programme for Engineers, being held from 13–15 August 2026 at STAR-C, CST, Phuentsholing.

The training brings together 22 engineers and energy professionals from various sectors and focuses on practical Skills in PVsyst modelling, solar PV system design, energy yield simulation, shading analysis, performance optimisation, and techno- economic assessment.

The programme is conducted in collaboration with the International Solar Alliance (ISA) and is supported by a technical expert and trainer from Cleantech Industry Resources (CIR), India, bringing industry expertise and practical knowledge to the training. The technical sessions are being led by Kruti Jani from CIR, a clean energy project development and engineering company supporting developers, EPCs, IPPs, asset owners, and other project stakeholders across the project lifecycle.

The inaugural session was graced by Ms. Sucheta Chatterjee, Consul General of India, Phuentsholing, as the Chief Guest, alongside CST leadership, representatives from ISA, the STAR-C Bhutan team, faculty members, and participating engineers.

This training marks an important step in STAR-C Bhutan’s transition from foundational technician-level training to advanced professional capacity building, contributing to Bhutan’s vision of achieving 5,000 MW of solar capacity by 2040.

The College of Science and Technology (CST) came together for a Khader Ceremony and Lhachoé to honour and congratulate Mr. Chimi on his appointment as the Dean of Academic Affairs.

The gathering brought together faculty, staff, and students in a spirit of unity, respect, and goodwill to mark this important milestone. The CST community joined in offering blessings, prayers, and warm wishes as Mr. Chimi begins this new chapter of leadership and service.
