Resilience in individuals who have experienced significant trauma involves several key psychological mechanisms, many of which are deeply connected to neuroplasticity—the brain's ability to the brain's ability to reorganize and form new neural connections throughout life.

Neuroplasticity: This is the brain's ability to adapt and change in response to experiences. Trauma can initially cause negative changes, but positive experiences and interventions can promote healing and resilience. For instance, engaging in therapy, building supportive relationships, and practicing mindfulness can help the brain form new, healthier neural pathways.
Trauma's Impact on Brain Chemistry: Trauma often leads to changes in brain chemistry, particularly in the amygdala (responsible for fear responses), hippocampus (memory processing), and prefrontal cortex (decision-making and emotional regulation). Trauma can cause the amygdala to become overactive, making individuals more prone to anxiety and fear. The hippocampus might shrink, affecting memory and the ability to distinguish between past and present threats. The prefrontal cortex can become less effective, leading to difficulties in controlling emotions and impulses.
Rewiring the Brain: Resilience involves the brain's ability to recover and reorganize after trauma. Positive social interactions, therapy, and stress-reducing activities like exercise and meditation can help. These activities promote the release of neurochemicals such as dopamine and serotonin, which improve mood and promote neural growth.
Cognitive Reframing: This involves changing the way one thinks about and interprets traumatic experiences. Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) helps individuals develop healthier thought patterns, which can rewire the brain and improve emotional responses.
Building New Neural Pathways: Consistent positive experiences can create new neural connections that support resilience. Learning new skills, setting and achieving goals, and building strong social networks can all contribute to this process.
By understanding neuroplasticity, individuals can develop resilience, transforming their brains and improving their ability to cope with and thrive after trauma.

How does criticism affect a child?

Do you know constant criticism can act as a traumatic experience for a child even though you as an adult might feel that it’s a normal reaction to the child’s tantrum?

If the child is criticized during foundation years especially when the criticism comes from parents the child starts creating a distorted image of himself/ herself by giving it a self-assigned meaning. He/she might decode it as feeling a sense of unworthiness. Criticism can have a significant impact on a child's emotional and psychological development, shaping their self-esteem, self-confidence, and overall well-being. How criticism affects a child largely depends on the nature, tone, and frequency of the criticism, as well as the child's temperament and relationship with the person offering the criticism.

Self-Esteem and Self-Confidence: Frequent or harsh criticism can erode a child's self-esteem and self-confidence. If a child consistently hears negative feedback, they may start to believe that they are inadequate or incapable, leading to a lack of belief in their own abilities.
Anxiety and Stress: Continuous criticism can create a stressful environment for a child. They might become anxious about making mistakes or trying new things, fearing that they will be criticized again. This can hinder their willingness to take risks or explore their interests.
Perfectionism: Children who are subjected to excessive criticism might develop perfectionistic tendencies. They may feel the need to constantly strive for flawlessness to avoid criticism, which can lead to a fear of failure and an inability to accept mistakes.
Negative Self-Image: Consistent criticism can shape a child's perception of themselves as inherently flawed or undesirable. This negative self-image can impact their relationships, academic performance, and overall sense of well-being.
Avoidance of Challenges: Children who are frequently criticized might avoid challenging situations or tasks to prevent potential criticism. This avoidance behavior can hinder their personal growth and limit their opportunities for learning and development.
Resentment and Defensiveness: Children who feel unfairly criticized might develop feelings of resentment towards the person delivering the criticism. They may also become defensive and resistant to feedback, hindering their ability to learn from constructive criticism.
Impact on Relationships: Children who experience harsh criticism may struggle with building and maintaining healthy relationships. They might have difficulty trusting others, fearing judgment and negative feedback.
Academic Performance: Continuous criticism can affect a child's performance in school. They might become disinterested in learning due to the fear of being criticized for making mistakes.
Mental Health: Prolonged exposure to criticism without positive reinforcement or support can contribute to mental health issues such as anxiety, depression, and low self-worth.
It's important to note that not all criticism is harmful. Constructive criticism, provided in a supportive and empathetic manner, can help children learn and grow. Children need guidance and feedback to understand what they can improve, but it's crucial that the criticism is balanced with praise, encouragement, and an emphasis on effort rather than just outcomes.

By raising your frequency, you tune in to clearer, more positive experiences.

To raise your frequency, pay attention to what you feed your body and mind. For example, if you eat unhealthy junk food all the time, you will feel sluggish and low on energy. Instead, eating nutritious foods like fruits, vegetables, and whole grains can boost your physical and mental health. Similarly, if you constantly consume negative news or surround yourself with pessimistic people, your mindset will be affected. Reading inspiring books, listening to uplifting music, and spending time with positive individuals can elevate your mental state.

Think of yourself as a magnet. If you vibrate at a low frequency, you will attract negativity, but if you vibrate at a higher frequency, you will draw in positivity and like-minded people. For instance, if you practice gratitude daily, you start to notice more things to be thankful for, attracting more positivity into your life. Keeping a check on what you feed your body and mind acts as a catalyst for your overall growth, deciding your energy level and ultimately shaping your life's experiences. By consciously choosing higher-frequency inputs, you can protect yourself from negativity and attract a more positive, fulfilling life.

Remember, to avoid being affected by other people's negativity and stay focused on our priorities, it's important to raise our frequency. Is it right to convince oneself in a bad situation that 'All Is Well'?

Convincing yourself that all is well in a bad situation can lead to denial, hindering personal growth. Embracing both positive and negative emotions is essential, as they are valid and hold significant importance in our lives. Dynamic acceptance, a powerful concept, involves acknowledging the current reality while actively working to improve it. By fully experiencing and accepting our emotions, we can navigate through difficult times more effectively, fostering resilience and growth. Rather than ignoring our struggles, we should confront them head-on, using them as catalysts for transformation and self-improvement.

Back in 2022, I went to Vipassana where we were taught the concept of Anicca a Pali word that means impermanence. It's also known as anitya in Sanskrit. In Buddhism, anicca is one of three basic characteristics of all existence, along with anatta (the absence of a permanent self) and dukkha (suffering). These three characteristics make up the ti-lakkhana.

Change is the only constant. So, I assure you that this too shall pass. I hope whatever you are going through will pass sooner and you experience the positive side of life too.

The Best Gift You Can Give To Others

The best gift you can give to people around you is the gift of self-improvement. When you start working on your mindset and belief system, you not only liberate yourself but also others. Our limiting beliefs can be problematic not just for us but for those around us. We may try to control or dominate others, creating problems in their lives.

No matter how good our childhood was, we all need healing and unlearning of societal systems. Many behaviors and beliefs we adopt are irrelevant and self-centered. Instead of growing and uplifting ourselves, we dominate others and want them to think and live like us, creating chaos in families and society.

Freedom should be our ultimate goal—freedom in beliefs, thoughts, actions, and more. True freedom goes beyond clothing choices or earning a living; it’s about living freely and allowing others to do the same.
