Learning Waste Management through Hands-on Practice: Learn • Observe • Sustain

Department of Science Education successfully conducted 7- days hand's on training and workshop on "vermicomposting as an approach to organic farming " from 19th of January , 2026🌱🪱

On Day 1, students prepared the materials such as a container with drainage holes, garden soil, dry leaves, partially decomposed cow dung, kitchen waste, and earthworms, and placed the setup in a cool, shady area.

On Day 2, they formed layers starting with stones for drainage, followed by soil, dry leaves, and cow dung, and maintained proper moisture.

On Day 3, earthworms were gently introduced and covered to protect them from light.

On Day 4, monitored moisture levels and observed earthworm movement without disturbing the compost.

On Day 5, small quantities of chopped kitchen waste were added and covered with dry leaves.

On Day 6, they lightly loosened the upper layer and observed the decomposition process and worm castings.

By Day 7, the compost became dark, granular, and earthy in smell.

Through this activity, students understood the process of vermicomposting, waste management, and the importance of eco-friendly fertilizer in sustainable agriculture.
