Well first understand that India imports more and exports less. And the top 2 things we import are no.1 oil and no.2 Gold & silver.

And when we buy oil, gold or silver we pay in dollars.

But suddenly because of war the oil prices shot up from 70$ a barrel to 100$ a barrel. And this situation was not made by govt but was external. But because India can't cut down on importing oil and have to import the same amount of oil, India has to pay 30$ extra for the same cost of 1 barrel of oil, and this is resulting in more dollars going out.

And more dollars going out means,Rupee weakens ↓

As rupee weakens, Indians panic → and therefore start buying more gold ↓ More Gold buying means govt has to import More gold
More import by govt means More dollars leave India
And more dollars leave India means Rupee weakens further ↓ (repeat)

So India was stuck in this vicious cycle which was leading to free fall of India rupee which needed to break.

And that is why Mr. Modi asked people to stop buying non essential items such as gold/silver for 1 year to break this circle.

But I believe the only fault by the govt of India is still India has not been able to increase their exports and get more dollars in the country.

But Now what are the 2 ways to strengthen the rupee?

1st we need to import less oil and to do that, we need to heavily produce energy from nuclear reactors, and solar energy.
And 2nd we need to transition fast to EV vehicles and for that the government has to lay down proper infrastructure for faster adoption of EV vehicles.
