Textbook Hindi VS Real Hindi

Sometimes Hindi learners wonder why they sound different from native speakers?

This is because when we learn a language we follow the textbook language which is essential for a good strong foundation of the language.
But along with this when we also learn the colloquial version of the language then our speaking becomes very natural and blends with the local people's language.

Happy Guru Purnima! 🌸

Guru Purnima is a beautiful reminder to pause and express gratitude to those who have guided us—not only our teachers, but also our parents, mentors, friends, and even our experiences that quietly shape who we become.

As a teacher, I feel especially grateful for my students. Every class brings new conversations, new perspectives, and new learning. Over the years, I have come to realise that while I teach Hindi, my students have taught me patience, empathy, and the joy of lifelong learning.

To all my teachers and to all my students—thank you for being part of my journey.

Wishing everyone a peaceful and blessed Guru Purnima. 🙏🌸

What Teaching International Students Have Taught Me? ✨

➡️ Teaching a language is about much more than grammar and vocabulary. Over the years, I've had the privilege of teaching Hindi to students from different countries, backgrounds, and cultures. Each learner has brought unique experiences, motivations, and perspectives that have shaped not only my teaching but also my own understanding of language and human connection.

➡️ In this video, I share five valuable lessons I've learned through these international teaching experiences. Whether you're a language learner, teacher, or simply interested in intercultural communication, I hope these reflections resonate with you.

💬 If you've ever learned a new language, what's one lesson the experience has taught you? I'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments.

5 Things That Surprise My Foreign Hindi Students

After teaching students from Germany, Switzerland, the UK, the USA, Mexico, Singapore and many other countries, I've noticed that these are the things they find most surprising about India.

1️⃣ The Indian Head Wobble :

It isn't always "yes." It can also mean "I'm listening," "okay," or simply acknowledge what you've said.

2️⃣ Family Relationships :

Hindi has specific words for almost every family relationship. Instead of just "uncle" or "aunt," there are different words depending on whether the person is from your mother's or father's side of the family.

3️⃣ Everything Has Gender :

In Hindi, even objects are masculine or feminine. This is one of the biggest challenges for many learners.

4️⃣ "Have You Eaten?"

This isn't just a question about food. It's often a caring way of asking if you're doing well.

5️⃣ Chai Is More Than Tea

In India, chai often means taking a break, catching up with friends, welcoming guests, or spending time with family.

💬 Which of these surprised you the most?
