‘If They Make Me Disappear, Never Back Down in the Fight for Motherland’: Bimol Akoijam Appeals to People
Congress MP Bimol Akoijam has urged people to remain steadfast in their fight for Manipur, warning supporters not to back down even if something happens to him or he is made to disappear, as political tensions intensify over his dismissal from Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU).
“If they do something to me and make me disappear, never back down in the fight for the motherland,” Bimol appealed to a roaring crowd of supporters.
In a sharp attack on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), he vowed to uproot what he described as the “diseased BJP” from the soil of Manipur.
Bimol also emphasised that political differences should not become personal enmity, pointing out that members of rival political parties were all Manipuris.
“Our party may be different, but not personally. I never wanted to talk about their character and morality. I respect them and have addressed many of them as ‘Tamo’,” he said.
He warned, however, that his restraint should not be mistaken for weakness. If his political opponents crossed the line, he said, he would speak openly about their character and morality, adding that his words could leave them so desperate that they might even want to hang themselves.
His remarks came as BJP lawmakers and supporters took to the streets demanding his removal as an MP following his dismissal from Jawaharlal Nehru University after sexual harassment complaints against him surfaced.
The university’s decision has drawn criticism from individuals and organisations who have alleged that the dismissal was politically motivated and intended to silence a voice advocating for Manipur and the wider Northeast.
