Medical s
tudents are the cream of society and play an important role in determining the health sufficiency of the country. In its continued progressive endeavour in education, the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) has embarked upon a movement of medical students to rekindle the thoughts of nationalism and reorient them in the service of the nation through health sector. Medical education in ancient India developed on the above precept by Charaka- an Indian physician par excellence and author of Charaka Samhita, the oldest known treatise on medicine. The medical profession was once considered as a sacred pursuit and even after the advent of western medical science and modern medical education, the motto was service. The need of the hour is to ponder on whether the current medical education is creating robust medical manpower with a national perspective and right atmosphere for addressing the nation’s health needs. The working group on medical education of the National Knowledge commission has observed that current Indian Medical education system is directionless, unregulated and non-standardized except in some reputed Institutions. Various suggestions have been placed to bring in a overhaul in medical education like, capacity building, community orientation, early clinical exposure, problem based learning, training in problem solving skills, efficient utilization of communication and information technology, curricular reforms, public health initiatives, value based education, Industry practice balance, inclusion of Research orientation and so on.
