Statement from MA RDG (2017-2019) regarding showcause notices issued to 30 students.
We, the class of M.A. Rural Development and Governance (2017 - 19 Batch) extend our solidarity to the 30 students in whose name Registrar, TISS Mumbai has issued show-cause notices. The show-cause notice were issued in the back drop of student protests against the mode of hostel fee payment that was resorted to in the beginning of academic year 2019-20.
In the past as well, students have had to protest for fee waivers, continuation of residential facilities, against instances of sexual harrasment, against deferment of BASS, etc. While TISS has several infrastructural limitations, the administration has always been receptive of student voices.
It is in this institute that we learned to question and ensure accountability. It is with the same ethos that the students protested in July 2019, the demands for affordable hostels and a mechanism to bridge the gaps, is a reflection of their commitment to ideals of social and gender justice. We are proud to have had training to deal with the matters from an institution that has a history of commitment to social justice.
It comes to us as a shock that administration is using punitive measures, that can have repercussions on student's careers, to silence the dissenting student voices. We urge the administration to revoke the show-cause notices and to provide clarity on the expected mode of payment for the GoI PM scholars.
We extend full support and immense power to the students against whom showcause notices have been noticed. We hope the students emerge out of this victorious with the support of administration, wherein a mechanism to bridge the gaps for GoI PM scholars is created, no punitive action gets taken on any of the students, and a healthy sphere of education gets created with equitable access.
